Iraq

Insurgents killed three children, a civilian, and a solider in attacks in Baghdad, Diyala, and Kirkuk. Security forces detained nine wanted men in Balad Ruz and five more in Mosul.


Somalia

Shabaab claimed it took control of the contested southern town of Balad-hawo. Hawiye elders denounced the African Union for shelling and killing Somalis in Mogadishu. Pirates hijacked a cargo ship and captured 24 crew members.


Yemen

Security forces arrested two women and seized 26 suspicious parcels related to the unfolding bomb plot against the US and Europe that originated from Yemeni airports. The military operation in the Al Kur Mountains in Shabwa province has ended.


Iran

Nigerian authorities confirmed that a shipment of weapons seized in Lagos originated from Iran. Israel claimed the weapons were destined for Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Europe has doubled petroleum imports from Iran since 2008, despite UN sanctions.




Pakistan

Security forces killed nine “terrorists” in Arakzai and two Taliban fighters in Swat. One of two Turks who went missing in the tribal areas was killed in a blast in Bannu. The Taliban bombed two NATO trucks near Quetta.


Afghanistan

Richard Holbrooke denied peace talks with the Taliban are underway. Russian counter-narcotics police participated in a raid on labs in Nangarhar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Zabul, Paktia, and Paktika. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


United States

Suspicious packages on air cargo flights to the US originating from Yemen have been searched in London, Dubai, Philadelphia, Newark, and New York City. Explosive devices were found in Dubai; FedEx has suspended all shipments from Dubai.


Iraq

An al Qaeda in Iraq suicide bomber killed 21 people and wounded 65 more in an attack on a cafe in the town of Balad Ruz in Diyala province. It was the first major attack in more than a month.



Yemen

A sheikh said that US Predators are flying over Marib daily. Three people were killed in clashes between pro-government tribes and Shia Houthi rebels in the north. Al Qaeda bombed the car of an intelligence chief.


Pakistan

US Predators killed three Arab al Qaeda fighters and four Taliban fighters in North Waziristan. The Pakistani air force killed 12 Taliban fighters in Arakzai. The Taliban beheaded three “criminals” in Mohmand. The Haqqani Network is negotiating with the Turi tribe in Kurram.


Afghanistan

France will begin withdrawing troops in 2011. The Taliban killed three civilians in Zabul, a policeman in Takhar, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Khost, and Logar.


Iraq

Insurgents launched a series of attacks on senior police officers, killing two colonels and wounding a general and a colonel in Baghdad and Jalawlaa. A suicide bomber killed a policeman in Mosul. Security forces detained 26 wanted men in Basrah and Wasit.


Somalia

Shabaab executed two teenage girls for “spying.” Fighting between Shabaab and Somali forces in the Bakool region left 15 people dead. Gunmen murdered six clerics in central Somalia. A Danish warship destroyed a pirate boat.


Yemen

Jamal Ahmed Mairan, the leader of al Qaeda in the Arbian Peninsula in the towns of Lauder and Modia, surrendered to authorities in Abyan province. A court charged Sharif Mobley, an American citizen with ties to al Qaeda, with murder.




Pakistan

The US killed six Taliban and al Qaeda fighters in two Predator strikes in North Waziristan. Three policemen were killed in a bombing in Quetta; two more were killed in a gunfight in Peshawar. Six people were wounded in a bombing in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Khost, Nuristan, Herat, and Baghlan. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the north and torched nine NATO supply trucks in Farah.


Russia

Security officials broke up a foreign financial network that funded the Caucasus Emirates. Police defused a bomb in Makhachkala, the capital of Chechnya. Security forces found an abandoned terrorist camp in a mine in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Al Qaeda

Osama bin Laden threatened to carry out attacks in France unless the country repeals the burka ban and withdraws its troops from Afghanistan. “The only way to safeguard your nation and maintain your security is to withdraw your forces from Bush’s despicable war,” bin Laden said in an audiotape.


Yemen

A suicide bomber killed only himself in an attack in Al Nor in Taiz province. The governor of Shabwa province denied the Al Kor mountains are Yemen’s version of Tora Bora. Several tribal leaders in Abyan called for opposition to al Qaeda.



United States

The FBI arrested Abdel Hameed Shehadeh and a federal court has charged him for attempting to join al Qaeda and the Taliban in Pakistan, Jordan, and Somalia. Shehadeh, an American citizen, also created jihadist websites and attempted to recruit a friend.


Pakistan: North Waziristan operation is not on the table

Pakistan

Lieutenant General Malik said the military is not going to carry out an operation in North Waziristan in the next six months. The Inspector General of the Frontier Corps said Arakzai is 90 percent cleared of the Taliban. Six Taliban fighters and one soldier were killed in fighting in Arakzai.
