Pakistan

An anti-Taliban tribal leader was killed in Kurram. Security forces killed two Taliban fighters in Swat; another was killed in a premature detonation in Kurram. A Taliban commander surrendered in Bajaur. The Taliban bombed a school in Mohmand.


Somalia

Hizbul Islam leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys vowed to continue to wage jihad against Somali and African Union forces. A Shabaab leader urged women to send their sons to wage jihad in Mogadishu. The president of Puntland declared victory over Shabaab forces under the command of Mohamed Said Atom.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured Taliban and Haqqani Network leaders and fighters Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Khost, Paktia, and Nangarhar. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.



Iraq

Thirty Iraqis were killed and 75 more were wounded in a series of 13 bombings in Shia areas in Baghdad. Three security officials and a captured al Qaeda commander were killed in an IED attack in Saadiya. An Awakening officer was killed in a shooting in Kirkuk.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is shopping for weapons in Chad and “laundering money” by buying “large tracts of land and villas in Niger, Mali, and Mauritania.” AQIM is using money obtained in illegal activities, including millions from the ransoming of European hostages.


Yemen

A Yemeni court charged US born al Qaeda cleric Anwar al Awlaki, and his cousin Othman al Awlaki, with “plotting and incitement to murder foreigners.” Security forces launched an operation in the provinces of Maarib and Shabwa to find al Qaeda operative Ibrahim al Asiri, who is suspected of manufacturing the parcel bombs.

The US killed six “militants” in a Predator strike in Pakistan. A suicide bomber killed two policemen in Swabi. Three Taliban commanders were killed in Swat. The brother of Baitullah Mehsud was murdered in North Waziristan.

The Taliban overran a district center in Ghazni, while the police force defected. The Taliban killed two ISAF soldiers in the south. Security forces killed and captured Taliban and Haqqani Network leaders and fighters Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Khost, and Paktia.


Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq killed 52 people, including two priests and 10 Iraqi policemen, in an attack on a church in Baghdad. Security forces killed a suicide bomber in Irbil and detained 23 wanted men in Basrah and four al Qaeda fighters in Wasit.


Al Qaeda in Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq, al Qaeda’s front organization, claimed credit for last night’s massacre at a Baghdad church that killed 52 Iraqis. Iraqi troops stormed the church. Al Qaeda was seeking the release of Muslim women in Egypt.



Turkey

The Union of Communities in Kurdistan denied that its ally, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) carried out yesterday’s suicide attack in Istanbul that wounded 15 policemen and 17 civilians. The PKK is the primary suspect in the suicide attack.

Yemen

Obama administration officials are pushing for the CIA to take control of US special operations forces and step up covert operations in Yemen. The Yemeni government downplayed the al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula terrorism plot that involved bombs placed on cargo aircraft.

Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Jabber al Fayfi reportedly provided the information that led to the discovery of the al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula terrorism plot that involved bombs placed on cargo aircraft. Fayfi was transferred from Yemen to Saudi Arabia two weeks ago.


Somalia

Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, a Somali-American, was sworn in as the country’s new prime minister. Fifteen people were killed in fighting between Shabaab and Somali and African Union forces in Mogadishu.

ISAF estimated 78 Haqqani Network fighters were killed in yesterday’s assault on a US combat outpost in Paktika. Seventeen more Taliban fighters were killed in the Baramcha operation. Insurgents killed six policemen and an Awakening leader in Baghdad, and a security guard for a political party in Baqubah. Security forces arrested 23 wanted men in Karbala and an al Qaeda “prince” in Khanaqin.


Turkey

A suicide bomber at a central square in Istanbul wounded 15 police officers and 17 civilians. A second, undetonated bomb was found near the attack. Authorities believe the radical Kurdistan Workers Party carried out the attack, as a truce with the group expired today.

Morocco

Security forces dismantled two al Qaeda-linked cells. One cell recruited jihadis to fight in Iraq, and the other, the Front of the Saharawi Jihad, plotted terrorist attacks in support of independence for Western Sahara.


Sweden

Two of three men arrested yesterday in connection to a bomb threat in central Gothenburg remain in custody. The security level remains elevated and police are working closely with Sweden’s Security Service.


Pakistan

The Taliban killed two Pakistani soldiers in North Waziristan. A senior Taliban commander was murdered in Karachi. Security forces detained a man carrying more than 120 pounds of explosives in Mansehra.
