Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured scores of Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Khost, Paktia, and Logar. Three Taliban fighters and two policemen were killed during clashes in Kunduz. The Taliban killed four civilians in Khost and two ISAF soldiers in the south.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two Christians in Mosul and a passports officer official west of Ramadi. Security forces detained three “gunmen” in Mosul. Muslims in Mosul protected a Christian family from an armed attack.




The Taliban

The Taliban responded to NATO’s declaration of a 2014 target to hand over control to the Afghan government, and stated that NATO forces should withdraw immediately. “They should not postpone withdrawal of their forces even be it for one day,” the statement read.


Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured scores of Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan, Zabul, Farah, Khost, Paktia, and Logar. The Taliban killed three civilians in Kandahar.


Iraq

Insurgents killed three Iraqis in bombings in Diyala and Salahadin. Security forces arrested a senior leader of the Naqshabandiya and nine fighters in Tikrit, and 10 wanted men in Basrah.


Somalia

Shabaab and the pro-government Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama clashed in the Galgudud region; both sides claimed victory. Ethiopia released five Somali elders who were detained in Puntland several weeks ago.

A court delayed the trial of US-born al Qaeda member Sharif Mobely after it could not provide a translator. A Yemeni politician allied with President Saleh claimed that the al Qaeda parcel bomb plot is a US creation designed to pressure the government into allowing the US establish a base on the island of Socotra.


Iran

Security forces killed a “Wahabbi terrorist leader” in Kurdistan. The defense minister said Iran would launch a series of new intelligence satellites. Britain will increase export restrictions to Iran.

Pakistan

Pakistan denied US requests to expand the Predator campaign against al Qaeda and the Taliban into Baluchistan. Five Taliban fighters were killed in Swat. The Taliban bombed a girls’ school in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Two suicide bombers killed four people in Laghman. Security forces killed 10 Taliban fighters in Uruzgan, and captured an al Qaeda and Taliban-linked suicide operations facilitator in Nangarhar and a Taliban commander in Kandahar. ISAF confirmed that three civilians were killed during an operation in Kunar.


Germany

Security officials believe that al Qaeda and allied terror groups are actively planning a Mumbai-styled attack on the Reichstag, or parliament, in Berlin. Two terrorists belonging to the six-man cell are thought to be in the capital.


Somalia

Ten people were killed in Mogadishu during clashes between Shabaab and Somalia and African Union forces. The president of Burundi called for African nations to contribute troops and join Burundi and Uganda troops in Mogadishu.


Yemen

Saudi Prince Turki al Faisal said Yemen is a major security threat to the Saudi state. “Terrorism emerges from Yemen and crosses into the kingdom,” Faisal said. Britain said providing military and humanitarian aid to Yemen was its “highest priority.”


Iran

NATO will invite Russia to join in maintaining a missile shield designed to stop Iranian ballistic missiles. Turkey again insisted that a NATO missile shield must not focus on Iran. President Sarkozy said that Iran is the primary ballistic missile threat.


Pakistan squashes US bid to expand Predator campaign

Pakistan

The US killed three “militants” in a Predator strike in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan. The Taliban killed three civilians in Kurram in a rocket attack from across the border in Afghanistan, and torched 10 NATO fuel tankers in Peshawar. The air force received six more US-made F-16 fighters.


Al Qaeda operatives detained in Karachi

Afghanistan

Security forces captured two Haqqani Network leaders in Baghlan and Khost, and a Taliban commander and several fighters in Helmand. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. US Marines will deploy a company of tanks to Helmand province.


Iraq

Insurgents killed the bodyguard for an Iraqiya member of parliament and a security guard for an oil pipeline in Mosul. A member of parliament escaped an assassination attempt in Diyala. Three wanted men surrendered to police in Baqubah.


Germany

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that the “bomb” found at an airport in Namibia yesterday was a “real-test suitcase” used to assess airport security. It is unclear who deployed the test bomb. The discovery caused a flight to Munich to be delayed.


Yemen

A Houthi fighter killed a tribal sheikh and two family members in a hand grenade attack in Amran province. A colonel in the intelligence services was stabbed by two men near the US embassy in Sana’a.



Afghanistan

The US killed 49 Taliban fighters during an operation in the Pech River Valley in Kunar, and killed 13 more today in an airstrike in the Sar Kani district of Kunar. US troops also killed 18 Taliban fighters in Helmand.


Iraq

In Baghdad, 30 prisoners escaped from the Tasfirat prison after battling with guards; most had been jailed for terrorism-related charges. In Basrah, security forces detained 10 wanted men.
