Italy

The government deported convicted terrorist Lerbi Mohamed to his home country of Algeria. Mohamed, a document forger, belonged to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and was a member of cells in Naples and other areas in Italy.


The Taliban

The US government added Qari Hussain Mehsud to the list of specially designated global terrorists. Qari Hussain is the Taliban’s “master of suicide bombers” and has been responsible for numerous attacks in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the US.


Iraq

Two suicide bombers killed 45 Shia worshipers in attacks in Karbala. Two civilians were killed in IED attacks in Baghdad and Baqubah.


Somalia

Shabaab fighters established checkpoints in Afgoye while the terror group has begun to block Shabelle Radio broadcasts. Three Somali teens escaped from a Shabaab jail in Gal’ad.



45 Iraqis killed in dual suicide attacks

Shia worshipers were targeted as they marched in a procession to the city of Karbala. The attacks are the latest in a string of bombings aimed at Iraq’s security forces and Shia majority.


Canada

Mounties authorities arrested wanted terrorist Faruk Khalil Muhammad Isa in Edmonton. Isa is wanted by the US for his involvement in the murder of five US soldiers in Iraq. He facilitated the movement of eight Tunisians into Iraq and encouraged others, including his sister, to carry out suicide attacks.


Pakistan

Sufi Mohammed, the instigator of the Taliban takeover of the Swat Valley from 2007-2009, is to be prosecuted for crimes almost a decade old. The Taliban executed four criminals in Hangu, killed three soldiers in North Waziristan, and killed one person in a bombing outside a school in Peshawar.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 20 civilians in Paktika and two ISAF soldiers in the south and the west. Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Farah, Khost, Paktia, and Faryab. Twelve Taliban fighters died in a premature detonation in Faryab.


Iraq

Al Qaeda suicide bombers killed 15 Iraqis in attacks on police and Shia worshipers in Diyala. Security forces killed two suicide bombers south of Mosul. Insurgents killed a civilian in Mosul.


Somalia

In a press conference in Mogadishu, Ali Mohamud Rage, Shabaab’s spokesman, condemned the United Nations for speaking out against the al Qaeda-linked terror group. Rage also denounced a local radio station for reporting that Shabaab was blocking humanitarian aid to starving Somalis.


Thailand

Muslim insurgents killed six Thai soldiers and wounded six more in an assault on a military outpost in Narathiwat’s Rangae district. Insurgents stormed the front gate and opened fire on unsuspecting troops in the base.





Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Farah, Nangarhar, Paktia, Khost, Wardak, and Kunar. More than 40 Taliban fighters surrendered in Kunduz.


Tajikistan

An Interior Ministry official said that four members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan were killed and 50 more were captured during operations in 2010. The official said IMU and Hizbut Tahir members abroad are financing terrorism in the Central Asian country.


Iraq

An al Qaeda suicide bomber killed more than 40 police recruits at a recruiting station in Tikrit. Insurgents killed a civilian in an IED attack in Baghdad.


Somalia

Thirty people were killed in shelling in Mogadishu. A minister in Puntland said a government program to train soldiers is training future Shabaab members. Shabaab arrested the former spokesman for the disbanded Hizbul Islam after he refused to accept a security post.


Yemen

A court convicted a Yemeni journalist and sentenced him to five years in prison after he interviewed al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s leader in 2009. Police rescued four Czech tourists shortly after they were kidnapped north of Sana’a.


United Kingdom

The Home Minister introduced a bill to proscribe the movement of the Taliban in Pakistan as a terrorist organization. The bill must be approved by the parliament.



Pakistan

Seventeen people were killed in a bus bombing in Hangu; no terror group has claimed the attack. The Taliban bombed a NATO fuel tanker in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Helmand and Ghazni. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. A suicide bomber in Khost killed only himself in a premature detonation.


Iraq

An al Qaeda suicide bomber killed a civilian in an attempt to assassinate the governor of Anbar province. The Basrah provincial council fired the police chief after 12 al Qaeda operatives escaped from prison. Three al Qaeda fighters surrendered to police.


Somalia

Two people were killed in shelling in Mogadishu. The government of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland has canceled cooperation with the weak Transitional Federal Government. The minister of agriculture said Shabaab is impeding aid to drought-stricken Somalis.


Yemen

A Yemeni court sentenced senior al Qaeda leader Anwar al Awlaki in absentia to 10 years in prison for his involvement in the murder of a French engineer. Othman al Awlaki, a cousin of Anwar, was also sentenced in absentia to eight years prison, while Hisham Mohammed Assem, the killer, was sentenced to death.




Pakistan

One person was killed in a rocket attack in Mardan. The Taliban bombed a health clinic in Mohmand and torched two NATO fuel tankers in Kalat.
