Iraq

Insurgents killed a policeman in a bombing in Baqubah and an Iraqi interpreter who worked for US forces in Al Kut. Police arrested 10 criminals in Karbala.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

The security director of Abyan province denied reports that Sa’id al Shihri, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s second in command, died while assembling a bomb. Saudi officials also denied Shihri is dead.


Yemen

Foreign Minister Qirbi said that the Yemeni government will not collapse due to protests as have the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia. The US ended its ban on air cargo from Yemen.



Russia

A pair of suicide bombers killed a soldier and a policeman in a pair of attacks in the village of Gubden in Dagestan. A female suicide bomber killed a soldier outside a police station. Hours later a suicide bomber killed a policeman in an attack on a checkpoint.


Iran

Police fired teargas at protesters in Tehran and detained dozens during violent clashes. Protests were also held in Isfahan, Mashhad, and Shiraz. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi was also placed under house arrest.


Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed two security guards in an attack at a hotel in Kabul. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. ISAF troops detained several Taliban fighters in Kandahar while targeting a commander linked to al Qaeda. Two British troops died in a shooting on a base in Helmand.


The Taliban

The Taliban, via its propaganda arm, the Voice of Jihad, released a statement in support of the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The Taliban said Mubarak’s resignation signaled an end to US power and influence in the Middle East.


Iraq

An insurgent died in a premature detonation in Fallujah. Three wanted men surrendered to authorities in Baqubah. The government will delay the purchase of F-16s in order to boost food rations.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Anwar al Awlaki came out in support of Abdulelah Shaea, a Yemeni “journalist” who was convicted of supporting al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Awlaki praised Shaea on a tape released on the Internet. President Saleh ordered the release of Shaea on Feb. 1 but he is still in jail.


Yemen

Police forcibly broke up anti-Saleh protests in Sana’a and Taiz over the weekend; 165 people have been arrested. The US will aid in the training and expansion of Yemen’s counterterrorism forces.



Philippines

Soldiers killed five Abu Sayyaf fighters and overran their mountain camp in the town of Sumisip in Basilan. Two soldiers were also killed during a three-hour-long firefight with more than 30 Abu Sayyaf fighters.


Thailand

Eighteen Thai soldiers were wounded in an IED attack in the southern province of Yala. Muslim insurgents detonated a large bomb planted in a pickup truck as a patrol passed by. Several homes and shops were destroyed.


Afghanistan

Afghan troops detained eight Taliban fighters in Kandahar, Zabul, Helmand, and Khost. The US suspended a trilateral meeting on regional security in Washington with Afghanistan and Pakistan.


Iraq

Insurgents killed a policeman in an armed attack in Baghdad and a civilian in an IED attack in Basrah. The government imposed tight security measures in Ramadi in preparation for a protest.


Somalia

Three people were killed in a bombing in Mogadishu. Hundreds of Somalis held anti-Shabaab demonstrations in Mogadishu. A Danish warship captured a pirate mothership off the coast of Somalia.


Egypt

The military suspended the constitution, dissolved the parliament, and imposed military rule. The military will run the country for the next six months, or until elections are held.


Pakistan

A suicide bomber wounded three soldiers in Malakand. A court issued a warrant for former President Pervez Musharraf for involvement in the murder of Benazir Bhutto. The US demanded full immunity for a consular official detained after killing two people in Lahore.


Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide assault team killed 16 police officers and three civilians in an attack on a police headquarters in Kandahar. The Taliban kidnapped two policemen in Kunar. Security forces killed two Taliban fighters in Badghis, and detained 20 Taliban fighters in Kandahar and five more in Farah. Helmand’s governor accused Iran and Pakistan of […]


Somalia

A senior Shabaab official said that primary and secondary schools in lower Shabelle province must teach “jihad.” Police displayed two captive Shabaab fighters to the media.


Iraq

A suicide bomber killed 31 Iraqis at a bombing that targeted Shia pilgrims at a cafe just north of Samarra. Police arrested 25 wanted men in Diyala.

Security officials told The Yemen Post that al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s deputy leader, Said al Shihri, was killed when a bomb he was assembling detonated prematurely. The report has not been confirmed.



Pakistan

Security forces killed 11 Taliban fighters in Swat and detained a suicide bomber in Tank. The Taliban executed five people in Mardan. Pakistan will detain a US consular official for an additional 14 days; the US has demanded his release.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed two policemen and three civilians in attacks in Uruzgan and Zabul. Security forces captured several Haqqani Network fighters in Khost. For three years, a Taliban leader was directing attacks in Kabul from Pul-e-Charkhi prison.


Iraq

Security forces arrested five al Qaeda in Iraq operatives in Diyala and Baghdad, and two wanted men in Kirkuk. Four Awakening fighters were killed during clashes between Arabs and Turcomans in Kirkuk.


Yemen

The US State Department said budget cuts will hurt Yemen’s fight against al Qaeda. More than 3,000 Yemenis held protests against the Saleh regime in Sana’a. Two soldiers were kidnapped by southern separatists in Lahj.


Mauritania

Two al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters who were detained while trying to carry out a bombing in the capital denounced the terror group on national TV. The AQIM fighters claimed they were targeting the French embassy and military headquarters.
