Iraq

Insurgents killed six people in an attack in Fallujah. Two protesters were killed in Mosul, and scores of protesters and policemen were wounded in Baghdad, Kirkuk, Basrah, Fallujah, and Salahadin.


Somalia

Forty-eight people were killed in heavy fighting between Somali forces and Shabaab fighters in Mogadishu. Shabaab is pressing young men to fight in Jowhar. President Sharif said the government has defeated Shabaab.


Al Qaeda in Iraq

The Interior Ministry claimed its troops killed Nasser al Din Allah Abu Suleiman, the Islamic State of Iraq’s war minister, during a raid in Anbar province. The report has not been confirmed by the US military.


Al Qaeda

In a tape released on jihadist forums, Ayman al Zawahiri said al Qaeda does not sanction attacks against civilians. “Sheikh Osama bin Laden … assigned me again to reiterate this matter. Therefore I urge the mujahideen to consider the rulings of sharia and the interests of Muslims before undertaking any jihad operation.”


Iran

The IAEA said it received reports that Iran is developing a nuclear-armed missile. The IAEA also said Iran is continuing to pursue its nuclear program despite sanctions.



Libya

President Gaddafi vowed to “crush any enemy” as rebels advanced on Tripoli. Fighting has been reported in Zawiyah, 30 miles outside of the capital. Gaddafi blamed the revolt on Osama bin Laden.



United States

The US charged a Saudi man attending college in Texas with plotting to carry out attacks in the US. Khalid Ali Aldawsar studied electrical engineering, purchased explosives over the Internet, and planned on attacking dams, a nuclear plant, and the home of former President George W. Bush.


Afghanistan

General Petraeus ordered an investigation into charges that General Caldwell ordered an information campaign against US politicians. Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban, Haqqani Network, and HIG commanders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, and Khost. A suicide bomber killed three people in Kandahar. Pakistan

US Predators killed six “militants” in North Waziristan. The Taliban killed five security personnel during an attack on a military outpost in Khyber and torched two NATO fuel tankers


Indonesia

Jemaah Islamiyah’s spiritual leader, Abu Bakar Bashir, told a court that training jihadists is an Islamic duty, but denied any involvement in setting up terror cells in Indonesia. Bashir is on trial for setting up terror camps in Aceh.


Iraq

A suicide bomber killed 13 people, including three policemen, in Ramadi. Al Qaeda killed civilians in Diyala and a policeman in Tal Afar. Muqtada al Sadr returned to Iraq.


Somalia

The African Union claimed it seized three Shabaab strongholds in Mogadishu. The Somali prime minister claimed Shabaab leaders have fled Mogadishu. Fighting between Shabaab and Somali forces has been reported in Beledweyne.


Libya

Forces loyal to President Gaddafi and rebels are battling in western areas of the country; fighting has been reported just 30 miles outside Tripoli. Large numbers of army units and other security forces have defected.


Pakistan

Security forces killed 10 “terrorists” in attacks on hideouts in Kurram. Police arrested 35 “miscreants” during a series of raids in Rawalpindi. Five “criminals,” including a Lashkar-e-Jhangvi operative, were arrested in Karachi.


Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces detained several Taliban fighters in Kandahar. General Caldwell said the Afghan Army loses 32 percent of its forces each year and the police lose 23 percent. Iraq

Insurgents killed two soldiers in Mosul. Security forces detained six al Qaeda commanders in Al Qaim. A policeman was killed in protests in Halaba, and 14 protesters were wounded in Dhi Qhar.


Iran

The US Treasury designated the head of the Basij militia and Tehran’s prosecutor general for human rights abuses. The two Iranian warships have transited the Suez Canal and are en route to Syria. Senegal cut ties with Iran after the latter shipped weapons to rebels.


Yemen

Two people were killed during protests in Sana’a. Unknown gunmen kidnapped an army colonel and eight soldiers en route to Amran province.


Somalia

Fourteen Shabaab fighters and 10 African Union fighters are reported to have been killed during heavy fighting in Mogadishu. Shabaab also captured a Burundian soldier and paraded the bodies of five African Union troops in the streets


Libya

The Italian government estimated that more than 1,000 people have been killed during the insurrection in Libya. More than one-half of the country is out of government control. An unconfirmed report claimed a former Guantanamo Bay detainee has set up an Islamic Emirate in Derna.


Bahrain

The government freed more than 50 political prisoners, including an opposition leader and 23 Shia accused of plotting to overthrow the government, in an attempt to appease protesters. The government also said it would permit peaceful demonstrations.
