Kenya

Police in the border town of Mandera arrested six Shabaab fighters, including a Pakistani and two Somalis who aquired American citizenship. Shabaab lost control of the town of Bula Hawa across the border in Somalia several days ago during clashes against Alhu Sunnah Wal Jama’a.


Thailand

Muslim terrorists killed two people and wounded five in Pattani province. Six gunmen killed a retired policeman in one attack, and two militants killed a young man on a motorcycle in another shooting.


Pakistan

Pakistan apologized for shelling Afghanistan six times over the past month. Security forces arrested three terrorists in Lahore. Gunmen opened fire on the car of Qatar’s consul in Karachi; no one was hurt.



ISAF, Afghan forces capture another HIG commander in Khost

Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 12 civilians, including five children, in an IED attack in Paktika. Prsident Karzai rejected General Petraeus’ apology for the accidental death of nine Afghan boys in Kunar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, Haqqani Network, and HIG commanders and fighters in Helmand, Khost, Baghlan, and Kunduz.


Iraq

Insurgents killed seven Iraqis at a train station in Basrah, two civilians in a shooting in Diyala, a policeman in Mosul, and a member of the Sunni Endowment in Baghdad. Soldiers killed a suicide bomber in Mosul.


Somalia

Alhu Sunnah Wal Jama’a took control of Bula Hawa from Shabaab and captured 48 prisoners; 25 people were reported killed during the fighting. Twenty-one people were killed during heavy fighting between Shabaab and Somali and African Union forces in Mogadishu.


Yemen

Suspected al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters killed four Republican Guards soldiers in Marib province. The US urged its citizens not to travel to Yemen. The Netherlands urged 90 of its citizens to leave Yemen.


Iran

President Ahmadinejad said US and European firms are bypassing export sanctions. The IAEA is unlikely to take action against Iran and Syria’s nuclear programs.




Pakistan

Gunmen killed five policemen and a Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan leader and his son in separate attacks in Karachi. Two “militants” died in a premature detonation in Karachi. Security forces killed six Taliban fighters in Kurram. The Taliban bombed three schools in Khyber, Kohat, and Swabi.

Afghanistan

The Taliban killed three Afghan soldiers in Parwan and Kandahar, a policeman in Herat, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed a Taliban district shadow governor and a fighter in Kunduz, and two more fighters in Herat.


United States

Two Americans, Mohamed Mahmood Alessa, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, pled guilty to attempting to travel to Somalia and join Shabaab. Adis Medunjanin, an associate of convicted terrorist Najibullah Zazi, told prosecutors he traveled to Pakistan to receive training.


Somalia

Al Qaeda and Shabaab have established a Taliban-like regime in Mogadishu’s suburb of Qobdoro. Shabaab is deploying more fighters from the Bay and Bakool areas to Mogadishu. Hassan Dahir Aweys vowed to continue to wage jihad against Somali and African Union forces.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

A terrorism court in Sa’ana, Yemen convicted one al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula operative to 15 years in prison and two others to two years for targeting foreigners in terrorist attacks. Videos of AQAP leader Anwar al Awalaki remain on YouTube despite efforts to have them taken down.


Yemen

President Saleh rejected opposition claims that he agreed to step down and said he will stay in power until 2013. Security forces wounded five protesters in Al Baeda.


Libya

Rebel forces in Zawiyah repelled an attack by Libyan forces loyal to President Gaddafi. The assault force included tanks and armored personnel carriers. More than 30 people were reported killed.


Pakistan

The Taliban killed nine people in a bombing at a mosque in Nowshera and torched three NATO fuel tankers in Khyber. Gunmen killed a man accused of blasphemy in Rawalpindi. Security forces killed two Taliban fighters and detained 13 more in Kohat.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Khost, and Kunar. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


Somalia

Fifty-three African Union peacekeepers have been killed during heavy fighting with Shabaab in Mogadishu over the past two weeks. Most (43) are from Burundi, which has suppressed the casualties. The other 10 are from Uganda.


Iraq

Security forces detained a Saudi al Qaeda operative in Mosul. The Saudi was captured with his passport and a suicide vest in his possession. A tribal leader in Baqubah escaped an assassination attempt.


Yemen

Three soldiers and two civilians were killed during clashes in Lahj. The military killed two civilians in the north. The Interior Minister said al Qaeda may attack in five southern provinces.



Pakistan

A suicide bomber killed nine people, including four policemen, in Hangu. The Taliban killed six policemen in an ambush in Khyber. Police arrested 18 suspects in the assassination of Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti.


Russia

In a videotape released on jihadist websites, Islamic Caucasus Emirate leader Doku Umarov called for all Muslims in Russia to rise up and wage jihad. A court charged three people for their involvement in the Domodedovo airport suicide attack.


Afghanistan

President Karzai denounced US forces for the death of nine civilians in Kunar and said talks with the Taliban are underway. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand and Kandahar. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


Iraq

An al Qaeda suicide bomber killed eight soldiers and two policemen in Haditha. Security forces captured a senior al Qaeda leader in Mosul and detained 24 wanted men in Basrah.
