The Taliban

The Taliban announced that it kidnapped Colin Rutherford, a Canadian citizen who reportedly was traveling in the Afghan-Pakistan region, and claimed he was a spy. Rutherford was captured by the Taliban in Ghazni province.


Pakistan

US Predators killed six “militants” in airstrikes in North and South Waziristan. The Taliban killed eight people in an attack on a bus in Hangu. Eighteen people have been killed in targeted killings in Karachi. Security forces killed four “terrorists” in Swat.


Afghanistan

The senate said ISAF should delay the turnover of security to Afghan troops. The Taliban killed four civilians in Kandahar and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Helmand and Kunar.


Iraq

Insurgents killed a policeman and a health official in Mosul. Security forces killed an al Qaeda commander in Addaya, and detained two al Qaeda commanders south of Kirkuk and eight wanted men in Basrah. Two insurgents killed themselves in a premature detonation in Shurqat.



Somalia

Ten people were killed during fighting in Mogadishu. Two people were killed after police forces battled amongst themselves in Mogadishu. Five Shabaab fighters died in a premature detonation in Lanto Buro. Shabaab’s leadership in Kismayo called on young men to fight the government in Mogadishu.


Yemen

Security forces killed seven protesters and wounded more than 110 after opening fire on crowds across the country. Doctors accused the government of using nerve gas. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters killed a soldier in Abyan.


Iran

Iran called on the UN Human Rights Council to investigate Western support for the MKO, the PJAK, and Jundallah. China will help Iran develop the Azadegan oil fields. Iran offered to negotiate with the UAE on the disputed island of Abu Musa.

President Karzai called for an end to NATO operations. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, Haqqani Network, Hizb-i-Islami Khalis, and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan commanders and fighters in Helmand, Nangarhar, Khost, and Baghlan. Pakistan

Security forces killed six “militants” in Arakzai. Four people were killed in a rocket attack in Jaffarabad. The Taliban torched two NATO fuel trucks in Mach and bombed a mosque in Peshawar.


United States

The US Army reprimanded nine officers for failure to spot the radicalization of Major Nidal Hasan, the gunman who was influenced by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula ideologue Anwar al Awlaki to murder 13 fellow soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas.


Iraq

Insurgents killed seven Iraqi soldiers in the Badush area west of Mosul, and a civilian in Baghdad. Security forces, backed by US troops, captured a Naqshabandiya leader in Kirkuk.


Somalia

Somalia’s prime minister warned that Shabaab may attempt to use oil tankers in a Sept. 11-styled attack. The United Nations Security Council urged the international community to increase funding for African Union forces in Somalia.


Yemen

Two people, including an influential tribal leader, were killed and hundreds more were wounded during clashes in Sana’a. The Interior Minister denied police killed the protesters and blamed “third parties.”

Kashmir

Indian police in Srinagar said they killed the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad in Kashmir and his bodyguard. The commander, Sajjad Afghani, was wanted for leading attacks in the disputed Idnian province.


Pakistan

US Predators killed five “militants” in a strike in Mir Ali in North Waziristan. The military successfully test fired a nuclear-capable missile.


Afghanistan

US Defense Secretary Gates castigated NATO allies for pushing a withdrawal schedule. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, Haqqani Network, and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan commanders and fighters in Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, Nangarhar, Samangan, and Balkh.


Somalia

Pirates killed five Puntland troops during a failed attempt to free a captive Danish family. Twelve people were killed in fighting in Galgudud. Thirty Shabaab fighters in Mogadishu defected.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters killed four police in Hadramount. Security forces confirmed that two AQAP fighters were killed at a funeral in Sa’ada. Three protesters were wounded in Aden.

Yet another HIG commander captured in eastern Afghanistan

ISAF and Afghan forces captured another commander from the Hizb-i-Islami Gulbuddin, this time during a raid in the eastern province of Nangarhar on March 8.
