Afghanistan

The Taliban overran a district in Nuristan, killed three ISAF troops in the east, and destroyed seven communications towers in Helmand. Security forces killed and captured dozens of Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Helmand, Uruzgan, Kapisa, Khost, Paktika, Logar, Kunar, and Jawzjan.


Iraq

An al Qaeda in Iraq suicide assault team killed 53 people during an assault on the Tikrit provincial center. Insurgents killed two civilians in Baghdad. Security forces arrested 12 wanted men in Basrah.


Al Qaeda

A US federal appeals court overturned a lower court’s order to release al Qaeda operative Uthman Abdul Rahim Mohammed Uthman from Guantanamo. Uthman, a Yemeni, fought US forces at the battle of Tora Bora in Afghanistan in 2001.


Yemen

The Yemeni government is said to have lost control of six of the country’s 18 provinces. Casualties from yesterday’s explosion at a weapons factory in Abyan have risen to 93 dead. More than 20,000 anti-government protesters marched in Sana’a.




Syria

President Assad’s cabinet resigned in an attempt to placate anti-government protesters. Tens of thousands of Syrians held pro-government rallies across the country.


Libya

President Gaddafi’s forces retook the town of Bin Jawad and have pushed rebel forces back to Ras Lanuf. The US launched 22 cruise missile strikes against Gaddafi’s military.




Pakistan

The Taliban killed 14 paramilitary troops in an ambush in Khyber, bombed two schools in Darra Adam Khel, and torched a NATO fuel tanker in Kalat. The Taliban and the Haqqani Network created the Lashkar-e-Khorasan to hunt down US spies in North Waziristan and surrounding areas.



Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed 20 road workers in an assault on a compound in Paktika province. The Taliban freed 19 of the 50 Afghan men kidnapped yesterday in Kunar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Nangarhar, and Logar.


Iraq

Insurgents killed six women and a young man in an attack on their home in Mosul. Three terrorists were killed when their car detonated prematurely in Baghdad. Kurdish Peshmerga forces withdrew from areas of Kirkuk.


Somalia

Seven people were killed in fighting between Shabaab forces and Somali and African Union troops in Mogadishu. The European Union is providing $93 million to the African Union mission in Somalia.



Yemen

A blast at a weapons factory in Jaar in Abyan province killed 78 people. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters looted the factory of truckloads of weapons and several armored vehicles prior to the blast, which is said to have been an accident.


Libya

Rebel forces, backed by NATO air cover, have taken control of Nawfaliyah and advanced to the town of Sitre, the home town of President Moammar Gaddafi. Qatar has recognized the rebels as the official representatives of the Libyan people.


Syria

Security forces opened fire on protesters in Duraa; casualties have not yet been reported. Security forces also arrested an American citizen and accused him of inciting protests against the Assad regime.



Afghanistan

The Taliban captured more than 40 Afghan police recruits in Kunar and killed an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, HIG, and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Khost, Paktika, Zabul, Kabul, Logar, and Baghlan.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two civilians in Baghdad and Mosul. Security forces broke up two al Qaeda in Iraq cells in Babil. Ansar al Sunnah vowed to continue fighting the Iraqi government.


Somalia

A Norwegian citizen of Somali origin was killed while fighting alongside Shabaab forces. The Transitional Federal Government extended its mandate for one year.


Israel

The Israeli Defense Force deployed the anti-rocket Iron Dome system near Beersheba. The Israeli Air Force killed two Islamic Jihad fighters in a strike in Gaza.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula killed seven troops in Marib province and took control of the town of Jaar in Abyan province after security forces fled. President Saleh rescinded his offer to step down at the end of the year.


Libya

Rebel forces, under the cover of UN aircraft, have seized the western coastal towns of Lanuf, Uqayla, Brega, and Ajdabiyah after government forces withdrew without a fight. Rebels have advanced to the town of Bin Jawad.


Syria

Twelve protesters and members of the security forces were killed during clashes in Latakia. The government claimed it would lift the emergency orders implemented in 1963; no timetable was given.



Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in in the Islamic Maghreb “took advantage of the pillaging of arsenals in the rebel zone [in Libya] to acquire arms, including surface-to-air missiles, which were then smuggled into their sanctuaries in Tenere,” the president of Chad said. A Malian official said AQIM has pilfered heavy weapons, including SAM-7s.


Lashkar-e-Taiba

Hafiz Saeed, the founder and chief of the Lashkar-a-Taiba and Jamaat-ud-Dawa, said Pakistani terror groups have a “right” to fight in Jammu and Kashmir to “teach India a lesson.” He also said that US involvement in South Asia has set back the fight in Kashmir.
