Iraq

Insurgents killed two US soldiers on April 3 in an indirect fire attack and two Iraqi policemen in Mosul. Iran shelled villages in the northern Iraqi province of Sulaimaniyah.


Yemen

Security forces and supporters of President Saleh killed 15 people and wounded more than 300 in attacks on protesters in Taiz and Hudaida. The US is pushing for Saleh’s removal from power.


Somalia

Five people were killed after Shabaab fighters attacked Somali and African Union bases in Mogadishu. Two people were killed during infighting within Somali security forces south of Mogadishu.


Libya

Rebel forces have failed to retake the town of Brega after four days of fighting. The rebels’ ad hoc government and military council is showing signs of strain after suffering military losses.




Pakistan

A pair of Taliban suicide bombers killed 42 people in an attack at a Sufi shrine in Dera Ghazi Khan. Security forces killed 15 Taliban and Lashkar-e-Islam fighters in Khyber and Hangu.


Afghanistan

Two policemen were killed in Koran-burning protests in Kandahar. The Taliban killed four Afghan soldiers in Wardak and Khost. Security forces killed and captured dozens of Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Helmand, Zabul, Khost, Paktia, Baghlan, Kunduz, Kunar, and Uruzgan.


Iraq

Security forces detained 20 wanted men in Basrah and Maysan. Al Qaeda in Iraq claimed it carried out last week’s suicide assault on the Salahadin provincial center that killed more than 50 people.


Bahrain

The six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council denounced Iran for its “continuing interference” in the region. The council issued the statement after Saudi Arabia sent troops to back the government of Bahrain during anti-government protests thought to have been incited by Iran.


Somalia

Commander Hassan Dahir Aweys admitted Shabaab has suffered major losses during the Somali and African Union offensive. Somali troops claimed to have taken control of Dhobley. A new, semi-autonomous state of Azania was created in the south.


Libya

Government forces battled rebels in the streets for control over the oil town of Brega. Saif al Islam, the son of President Gaddafi, offered a plan to transition to democracy under his watch.

Pakistan

Twenty Pakistanis were killed during a clash between the Lashkar-e-Islam and a tribe in the Tirah Valley in Khyber. Eleven troops were wounded in an IED attack in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Ten Afghans in Kandahar were killed in violent protests over a Koran burning in the US. US troops killed four Taliban suicide bombers in Kabul. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, HIG, and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Zabul, Khost, Logar, Kunduz, Jawzjan, and Kunar.



Iraq

A suicide bomber killed an Iraqi Army colonel, a captain, and a soldier outside a mosque in Fallujah. Terrorists killed four soldiers and two policemen in an attack on a checkpoint in Ramadi. Insurgents killed an Awakening fighter in Kirkuk.


Somalia

Somali military officials claimed that 15 Shabaab fighters were killed in fighting in two districts south of Mogadishu. Military forces shelled a Shabaab-controlled town of Dhobley on the Kenyan border.


Saudi Arabia

Saudi officials said that 5,080 people have been convicted of terrorist charges. Another 2,215 people have had cases referred to a special terrorism court for prosecution.


Syria

Security forces killed four anti-government protesters in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Police later arrested 21 protesters in Daraa and Homs.


Libya

NATO aircraft accidentally killed 13 rebel fighters in airstrikes on the road between Brega and Ajdabiyah. Heavy fighting is taking place in Ajdabiyah and Brega; rebel forces are said to be retreating in Brega.



Pakistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed a child in Darra Adam Khel. The Taliban killed three security guards at a supply terminal in Khyber used by NATO trucks. Lashkar-e-Islam leader Mangal Bagh survived an assassination attempt in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Five Nepalese security guards and three UN workers were killed after a mob overran a UN compound during a protest against the burning of a Koran in the US.
