Pakistan

US Predators killed six Haqqani Network fighters in South Waziristan in the first strike in 27 days. Pakistani officials have denounced the South Waziristan strike.




Afghanistan

Suicide bombers killed 10 Afghans, including a prominent tribal leader, in Kunar, and wounded 13 more in Kandahar and Kapisa. The Taliban killed five road workers in Nangarhar and a civilian in Logar. Iraq

One person was killed and 16 more were wounded in a car bombing in Kirkuk. Security forces detained three wanted men in Kirkuk. A member of parliament said that turning over members of the People’s Mujahideen of Iran to Iran would be unconstitutional.


Somalia

Ten people were killed during fighting between government and Shabaab forces in Mogadishu. Shabaab chopped off the limbs of three men in Johwar and killed Somali businessmen and elders in Bardhere for maintaining links with Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’a.


Yemen

Forces loyal to President Salah clashed with forces loyal to General Ali Mohsin Ahmar in the capital of Sana’a; two soldiers were killed. Pro-Saleh forces killed a protester in Aden.


Syria

Security forces detained more than 350 men during sweeping raids in the town of Baida. Anti-government protests have broken out in the town of Aleppo.


Egypt

The military has detained former President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons Gamal and Alaa. The three will be held for 15 days while an inquiry into their use of force during winter protests takes place.




Lashkar-e-Taiba

The chief of the US Pacific Command said that Lashkar-e-Taiba is expanding its operations into Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, as well as Europe. “Unquestionably, they have spread their influence internationally, and they are no longer solely focused in South Asia and on India …” Admiral Willard said.


Jemaah Islamiyah

Thai intelligence services are searching for Para Wijayanto, one of the two top Jemaah Islamiyah leaders, who is also thought to be the terror group’s emir. Wijayanto is thought to have facilitated Umar Patek’s travel to Pakistan.


Pakistan

Two Pakistanis on trial in the US said that the ISI backed the Mumbai terror assault that was carried out by the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Pakistan wants the US to end its Predator campaign in the tribal areas; the US said the attacks would continue.



Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, Haqqani Network, and HIG commanders and fighters in Helmand, Ghazni, Zabul, Khost, Wardak, Logar, Nangarhar, and Jawzjan. The Taliban killed a government official in Helmand and three children in Faryab. Thirty Taliban fighters surrendered to the government.


Turkey

Police rounded up 40 suspected al Qaeda and Turkish Hezbollah operatives during raids throughout the country. Police claimed that Halis Bayancuk, the leader of al Qaeda’s branch in Turkey, was among those captured.


Iraq

Insurgents killed nine Iraqis, including four policemen, in attacks in and around Baghdad. Security forces detained three wanted men in Kirkuk. The defense minister wanted the PMOI out of Iraq by the end of the year.


Libya

The French and British foreign ministers criticized NATO for not doing more to target President Gaddafi’s forces. “It is not acceptable that Misrata is still under fire and being bombarded by Gaddafi’s troops,” France’s foreign minister said.


Syria

A human rights group claimed that Syrian security forces have killed more than 200 people for protesting against President Assad’s government. Security forces opened fire on protesters in the village of Bayda; no casualties have been disclosed.



Taliban occupy abandoned US outpost in Kunar

A commander said the Taliban will establish “a permanent base” there, swore allegiance to Mullah Omar, and said his forces will continue to attack US troops until they “reach the gates of America.”



Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Laghman, Baghlan, Paktika, and Sar-i-Pul. A policeman and three Taliban fighters were killed in fighting in Nimroz. The Taliban killed a police officer in Sar-i-Pul and an ISAF soldier in the east. Fifty Taliban fighters renounced violence in Kandahar.


Iraq

Insurgents killed 19 Iraqis in bombings in Diyala, Fallujah, and Baghdad. Two bomb disposal policemen were killed while trying to disarm one of the bombs in Fallujah.


Somalia

Shabaab beheaded four men accused of spying in the southern port city of Kismayo. Shabaab has arrested dozens of others and accused them of spying and other “crimes against Islam.”


France

France has implemented its ban on facial coverings, which includes nijabs and burkas. Two women were briefly detained and then fined $217 during a protest against the ban in Paris.


Syria

Security forces attacked student protesters at the University of Damascus, killing one and wounding and detaining dozens of others. The Muslim Brotherhood now backs the anti-government protests.
