Iraq

Seventeen people were killed and more than 50 were wounded outside a mosque in Tikrit that is visited by government officials. Two provincial councilors and a senior police officer were wounded in the attack.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters are reported to have taken control of the Maqateen seaport in Abyan province. AQAP is said to be in control of the cities of Zinjibar in Abyan and Azzam in Shabwa.


Yemen

President Saleh and Prime Minister Mujawar were wounded during an artillery attack on the presidential palace in Sana’a. The government blamed Sheikh Sadiq al Ahmar, the leader of a large tribal confederation, for the attack.


Syria

Security forces killed 10 protesters in Hama. According to a human rights group, more than 50,000 people gathered in Hama to protest against the regime.


Somalia

Shabaab claimed that an American citizen named Abdullahi Ahmed carried out the May 30 suicide attack at a military base in Mogadishu. The FBI is investigating the claim.



Pakistan

Forty Pakistani security personnel and 45 Taliban fighters have been killed during clashes in Dir; 80 Pakistani troops may have been captured. The US and Pakistan are rumored to be forming a combined counterterrorism team.


Afghanistan

Security forces captured an al Qaeda leader in Balkh and killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Ghazni, Khost, Logar, and Balkh. The Taliban killed a German soldier in Baghlan and an ISAF soldier in the south. Thirteen Taliban fighters reconciled with the government in Kunduz.


Iraq

Six people were killed in a series of bombings in Ramadi; officials blamed al Qaeda in Iraq. A tribal sheikh was murdered in Fallujah.



Iran

Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi was forced to leave Bolivia after Argentina attempted to enforce an Interpol warrant for his arrest for his involvement in the 1994 bombing that killed 85 people. Russia’s foreign minister said there is “no proof” that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.


Syria

Syrian security forces killed 41 people, including children, while shelling and launching sniper attacks on civilians in the town of Rastan. The Assad regime is attempting to crush anti-government protests.


Somalia

Shabaab claimed it killed nine members of a faction of the Ras Kamboni Brigade that joined the government. Two people were killed during fighting between Shabaab and government forces in Mogadishu.



Nigeria

Boko Haram has claimed credit for a series of bombings and also said some were carried out by sympathizers and recruits in the military. The most deadly blast , which killed 14 people, took place at a barracks in Bauchi.





Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Khost, Paktika, and Takhar. The Taliban killed two tribal elders in Kandahar, an ISAF soldier in the east, and a civilian in Kabul, and destroyed four cell phone towers in Balkh and Ghazni.



Iraq

Insurgents killed three Awakening fighters in Tikrit and two Iraqis in Kirkuk. Security forces arrested 24 insurgents in Mosul.


Yemen

Thirty-seven people were killed during heavy fighting in Sana’a. Security forces killed 12 more anti-government protesters in Taiz.

Lebanon

A military court charged a Shia cleric with spying for Israel. The cleric, Sheikh Mohammed Ali al Husseini, has been critical of Hezbollah, Iran, and Syria, and reportedly has his own militia comprised of 1,500 fighters.



Syria

Syrian security forces bombed the southern town of Hirak, killing eight people, including a child. Troops are now in control of Hirak, which is near Daraa, a center of anti-regime activity.


Afghanistan

President Karzai said ISAF will become an “occupying force” if it does not end airstrikes. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Khost, Paktika, and Kunduz. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the east.


Iraq

Police captured the man who is thought to have killed the head of Iraq’s Justice and Accountability Commission. Vice President Adul Abdul Mahdi resigned in protest over the expansion of government.


Pakistan: Car belonging to missing journalist found in Sarai Alamgir
