The United States has decided to resume official diplomatic contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood. “The political landscape in Egypt has changed, and is changing,” an unnamed US official said.

Pakistan

Police arrested two suspected terrorists with a suicide vest in Islamabad. Pakistan’s defense minister said US personnel have been evicted from the Shamsi Airbase. Omar bin Laden is seeking to have Osama’s family members freed from Pakistani custody.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed a senior government official in Kandahar City and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Khost, Paktika, and Kunduz.


Iraq

Security forces arrested 13 wanted men in Basrah. Insurgents killed a civilian in Baghdad. A court sentenced the wife of slain Islamic State of Iraq leader Abu Omar al Baghdadi to life in prison.


Iran

Britain accused Iran of testing nuclear-capable missiles; the US said Iran is “bragging” about its missile program. President Ahmedinejad denounced the arrest of four of his followers in the government.


Syria

Security forces killed seven civilians during operations against anti-regime protesters in the villages of Mareyan and Ahsem. Britain accused Iran of supporting Syria’s crackdown on anti-regime elements.


Hezbollah

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon is expected to release its indictment for the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri within the next week. A senior Hezbollah commander is said to be named in the indictment.


Libya

France confirmed that it is providing weapons to Libyan rebels fighting President Gaddafi. French cargo planes airdropped assault rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and ammunition to rebels in the Nafusa mountains.


Egypt

Security forces wounded more than 1,000 protesters at Tahrir Square in Cairo. The protesters demand the prosecution of security officials who killed demonstrators earlier this year.


Somalia

Shabaab sent 76 fighters to Yemen to aid al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Fifteen people were killed during fighting between Shabaab and government forces in Garbaharey.



Afghanistan

A suicide assault team killed 14 people in an attack on a hotel in Kabul. The Taliban killed two ISAF soldiers in the south and four civilians in Jawzjan. Iraq

The Mahdi Army’s Promised Day Brigade claimed it carried out multiple IED and rocket attacks on US forces. Insurgents killed an Awakening leader in Abu Ghraib. The president approved the execution of a Tunisian involved in the destruction of the Al Askaria mosque in 2006.


Yemen

Security forces arrested six al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Aden. Three kidnapped French aid workers have been located.


Somalia

Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, a Somali-American, was named the new prime minister of Somalia. Shabaab beheaded two civilians in Puntland. Two soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Mogadishu.


Egypt

A military court will re-try Mohammad al Zawahri for his involvement in terror attacks in Egypt in the 1990s. Mohammed is the brother of Ayman al Zawahiri, the new leader of al Qaeda who also leads the Egyptian Islamic Jihad.








Pakistan

US Predators killed 21 Taliban fighters in two strikes in North Waziristan. Fedayeen-e-Islam commander Shakirullah Shakir was gunned down in Mir Ali. Kurram Taliban commander Fazal Saeed has left the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan as the group has attacked mosques and civilians. The Taliban bombed two NATO fuel tankers in Mastung.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed seven Afghans in attacks in Ghazni. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Helmand and Kunduz. A UAV crashed in Farah province.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two US soldiers in the north and four civilians and a policeman in attacks in Mosul. Security forces captured al Qaeda in Iraq’s “electricity minister” in Anbar and two “terrorists” in Basrah.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is consolidating its control of Zinjibar and Jaar in Abyan province. The military said it foiled a terror attack in Aden.


Libya

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for President Gaddafi, his son Saif al Islam, and military intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi. The three have been charged with “crimes against humanity” for targeting civilians during the current rebellion.
