Pakistan

A court has charged TNSM chief Sufi Mohammed and 23 others with treason and murder for attacking a police station and government building, and killing 11 security personnel. Sufi brokered the Swat peace accord that put the Taliban in charge of much of northwestern Pakistan in 2009.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 11 policemen in Helmand and Kandahar, beheaded two people in Farah, and killed four ISAF soldiers in the south and the east. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and IMU leaders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Khost, Paktia, Nangarhar, Balkh, and Takhar. General Allen has taken command of ISAF.


Al Qaeda in Iraq

The Islamic State in Iraq, al Qaeda’s political front, claimed it carried out the June 26 suicide attack in Tarmiyah and the July 5 suicide attack in Taji. The group also claimed 15 other operations north of Baghdad, SITE reported.


Iraq

Security forces killed three gunmen and arrested three more in Mosul, and detained a senior al Qaeda leader in Thi Qar and 18 wanted men in Basrah. Insurgents killed an Awakening fighter in Kirkuk. Iraqi is seeking US trainers, not soldiers, to remain after the December 2011 deadline.


Yemen

Yemeni tribes have joined government forces to battle al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in the city of Zinjibar in Abyan. The Joint Meeting Party accused Iran of backing the Shia Houthi rebels in Al Jawf province.


Syria

More than 30 people were killed during fighting between pro- and anti-government protesters in the city of Homs. The government recognized Palestine as a state.


United States

The trial of Mohammed Wali Zazi has begun in New York City. Mohammed is the father of Najibullah Zazi, who pled guilty to training at al Qaeda camps and plotting to carry out suicide attacks in NYC subways.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed it carried out the July 5 raid on the military barracks in the town of Bassiknou in Mauritania. The group claimed only two of its fighters were killed, and denied government reports that five of its fighters were killed and 15 were captured, SITE reported.


Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide assault team killed a key adviser to President Karzai and a member of the Afghan parliament in an attack in Kabul. The Taliban killed five ISAF soldiers yesterday and today in the south and the east. Iraq

Insurgents killed two civilians, two policemen, and a soldier in Mosul. Iranian troops crossed the border into Iraqi and killed two PJAK fighters; an IRGC soldier was also killed.



Syria

Security forces loyal to President Assad surrounded the town of Albu Kamal one day after intelligence officers killed five people. Albu Kamal is on the border with Iraq.


Iran

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei told President Zardari that the US is the real enemy of Pakistan. President Ahmedinejad said Iran hopes to open a gas pipeline to Pakistan by 2013. Argentina demanded that Iran turn over suspects in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center that killed 85 people.


Somalia

The United Nations has begun to deliver drought aid to camps in Somalia that are run by Shabaab. “”They gave assurances that our access for humanitarian purposes would be unhindered,” a UNICEF official said.


India

Pakistan

The Taliban killed 10 people in an attack in Kurram and looted 11 schools in Khyber. Two suicide bombers were arrested in Nowsehra.


Afghanistan

Seven Afghan security personnel and seven Taliban fighters were killed during fighting in Farah. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. An Afghan soldier killed an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Helmand, Nangarhar, and Balkh.


The Taliban

The United Nations removed 14 Taliban members from the terrorist sanctions list. Four members of the Afghan High Peace Council were removed from the list.


Iraq

Thirteen people have been killed and more than 100 have been wounded in terror attacks on Shia pilgrims in Karbala; one of the attacks, a suicide bombing, was carried out by a female. Insurgents killed a US soldier in the south.


Somalia

Shabaab has recruited at least 21 young men in the US to fight the government and African Union forces in Somalia. Shabaab rejected volunteers that are too young as it fears this would expose its operations.



Algeria

A pair of Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb suicide bombers killed four people in an attack on a police headquarters in the town of Bordj Menaiel in Kabylie, an AQIM stronghold. Three policemen were among the four people killed.


Libya

The US government has formally recognized the Transitional National Council as Libya’s legitimate government. The Transitional National Council has been battling longtime president Moammar Gaddafi for control of the country.

The Taliban killed nine civilians in Helmand, two policemen in Nimroz, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Paktia, and Nangarhar.


Yemen

The government claimed al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula conspired with the Joint Meeting Parties to kill President Saleh and other senior officials in last month’s attack at a mosque in the presidential compound.




Iraq

Insurgents killed eight people in bombings in Karbala. Security forces detained eight wanted men in Basrah and five more in Karbala. The US turned over more than 200 prisoners, including two of Saddam Hussein’s half-brothers and a former defense minister, to Iraqi custody.
