Syria

Syrian security forces killed 27 people in attacks against anti-regime protesters throught the country. Thirteen were killed in Hama, where the government is deploying militias called shabbiha.




China

The local government in Kashgar claimed the East Turkestan Islamic Movement was behind the attack that killed 11 people. The government said the leader of the group was captured and his fighters trained at a camp in Pakistan.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Paktia, and Paktika. Afghan officials claimed ISAF killed four policemen in an airstrike in Kunar.


Pakistan

US Predators killed four Taliban fighters in an airstrike in South Waziristan. The Taliban torched 10 tankers in Khairpur that are used to transport fuel to NATO forces in Afghanistan.


Yemen

Yemeni strike aircraft killed 13 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Zinjibar. The commander of the besieged 25th Mechanized Brigade said Yemeni security forces abandoned their weapons and fled during the AQAP takeover of Zinibar two months ago.


Iraq

Security forces detained 28 wanted men in Basrah. Attacks by Iranian militias on US forces decreased significantly in July.


Somalia

The African Union said four of its soldiers were killed by Shabaab fighters in Mogadishu. Ten people were killed during fighting between Shabaab and a pro-government militia in Gedo.



Saudi Arabia

A court in Jeddah has begun the trial of Haila Al Qusayyer, who is accused of finacning, recruiting, and fighting for al Qaeda. Qusayyer is known as Madam al Qaeda as she was married two of the terror group’s senior leaders.


Pakistan

The Taliban killed a pro-government tribal elder who was encouraging refugees to return to Tank. Security forces detained four Taliban fighters in Karachi.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 10 policemen and a civilian in a suicide attack in Helmand and an ISAF soldier in the east. Police killed a Taliban leader in Jawzjan. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Khost, Paktia, Laghman, Faryab, and Takhar.


Iraq

Insurgents assassinated the Director-General of Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research and killed his son in Baghdad. The Iraqi military wants to double the number of F-16s purchased from the US.


Somalia

The US added Shabaab leaders Omar Hammami and Hassan Mahat Omar to the list of designated terrorists. Shabaab claimed it killed a US military officer who was training African Union forces in Mogadishu.



Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan has created a panel to negotiate with Boko Haram, the radical Islamist terror group behind multiple attacks, including suicide bombings. The panel will also ensure that security forces are acting with “professionalism.”



Syria

Security forces killed 81 anti-regime protesters during an assault on the city of Hama. The military deployed tanks and artillery against civilians in the city, and have surrounded hospitals.



Kashmiri faked death: Indian intelligence

“The indications are that Kashmiri intentionally floated the news of his death in a drone attack to avoid the heat following the killing of Bin Laden in Pakistan,” according to a report.


The Netherlands

Police arrested an Iraqi man who wanted to join al Qaeda in Syria to carry out attacks in the region. “The man wanted to travel to Syria to join al Qaeda and then possibly commit an attack in Iraq or Palestine,” according to a statement by the public prosecutor.


Philippines

Seven Marines and 13 Abu Sayyaf fighters were killed during heavy fighting near the town of Pakitul in Sulu province. Abu Sayyaf beheaded two of the Marines.


Afghanistan

Thirteen Taliban fighters and two policemen were killed during clashes in Logar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, and Paktia.


Iraq

Iraqi troops killed three civilians during a raid in Balad. Insurgents killed two civilians in a bombing in Taji. The US special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction said Iraq is less safe than it was a year ago.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula killed two Army colonels and five soldiers in attacks in Zinjibar; seven AQAP fighters were also killed during the fighting. The Yemeni Air Force killed 15 tribesmen in air and artillery strikes in Zinjibar.


Jordan

The State Security Court sentenced three men who were convicted of recruiting individuals to join al Qaeda to five years in prison. The sentences were cut in half. One of the men also plotted to carry out attacks in the region.


Syria

A human rights group claimed that Syrian forces killed 20 anti-regime protesters in the cities of Latakia, Hama, Homs, Deraa, Kiswa, Deir al Zor, and Damascus. The government claimed that a soldier was killed in Albu Kamal.


Somalia

Shabaab forces in Mogadishu killed three African Union soldiers and dragged their bodies through the streets of Mogadishu. Five civilians were also killed during fighting in Mogadishu.


Libya

Members of an Islamist militia killed rebel military leader General Abdel Fattah Younes. The Obaida Ibn Jarrah Brigade is allied with the rebels in fighting President Gaddafi’s regime.
