Algeria

A suicide bomber detonated his car bomb outside of a police station, wounding 29 people, including 11 policemen. The blast took place in Tizi-Ouzou, an area with a strong al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb presence.



Pakistan

“Gunmen” kidnapped a US citizen from his home in Lahore. A military court convicted seven men for their role in the 2009 assault on Army GHQ. One Afghan child in South Waziristan was killed in mortar fire that was launched from Afghanistan.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed five policemen and three Afghan intelligence officers in Wardak, and five civilians in Helmand. Five Taliban fighters and two policemen were killed in a clash in Herat. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand, Faryab, and Baghlan.


Lebanon

Five prisoners, several of whom are members of the al Qaeda-linked Fatah al Islam, escaped from the Roumieh prison near Beirut. Four of the prisoners are Lebanese citizens and one is a Sudanese citizen.


Somalia

Shabaab’s spokesman denied reports that the groups withdrew from Mogadishu due to splits in the leadership. Security forces found a large Shabaab weapons cache in the Bakara market.


Indonesia

Jemaah Islamiyah operative Umar Patek is cooperating with police since his extradition from Pakistan, officials said. Patek has admitted to his role in the 2002 Bali bombings and attacks on churches.



Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

US intelligence officials believe al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is attempting to manufacture ricin for a WMD attack on the US. Officials said that AQAP was gathering the precursors and attempting to manufacture them in safe havens in Shabwa province in Yemen.




Pakistan

The Taliban killed three policemen while freeing Taliban prisoners from custody in Peshawar. Mohmand Taliban commander Omar Khalid claimed credit for yesterday’s female suicide attack in Peshawar.



Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Paktia, and Baghlan. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


Russia

Security forces killed seven “militants” in Dagestan, including a commander who trained a suicide bomber and who is supposedly linked to “the Georgian special service.” A policeman was murdered at his home in Dagestan.


Yemen

Soldiers killed four al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters during artillery strikes in Zinjibar. Tribesmen arrested 15 suspected AQAP fighters in Lawder.


Somalia

Shabaab and government forces again clashed in Mogadishu. The Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency said it was opening an office in Somalia.



Egypt

Security officials said Egyptian forces will launch an operation against al Qaeda cells that have been established in the Sinai peninsula. The cells are operating “in the area of Sakaska close to Rafah” and have been training for more than a month.


Philippines

Two men who were planting a bomb on a road in the southern Philippines were killed in a premature detonation. The chief of police speculated that the bomb was intended to disrupt talks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.



Pakistan

Seven people, including five policemen, were killed in an IED and female suicide attack in Peshawar. Three women and two children were killed in a bombing at their home in Khyber.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed six ISAF soldiers in the south and another in the east, and two brothers in a shooting at a mosque in Nangarhar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, and Zabul. President Karzai said he would not seek a third term as president.


Iraq

Insurgents killed three Iraqis in a pair of bombings in Ramadi and a member of the Sunni Endowment in Al Kut. Security forces detained six wanted men in Kirkuk.


Lebanon

Two men were killed while attempting to plant a bomb on a car in a suburb north of Beirut. The car is owned by the son of a judge. No group has been linked to the blast.


Somalia

The overall commander of African Union forces in Somalia said more troops are needed to secure Mogadishu after Shabaab forces pulled out last weekend. Somali troops and Shabaab forces exchanged mortar fire in Afmadow.


Indonesia

Pakistan has extradited Jemaah Islamiyah operative and leader Umar Patek to Indonesia. Patek was involved in the Bali bombings and is said to have been in Abbottabad, Pakistan to meet with Osama bin Laden.



Afghanistan

US special operations forces killed the Taliban commander and the shooter who were responsible for last weekend’s downing of a helicopter in Wardak. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, and Faryab. The Taliban beheaded four Afghans in Farah and killed an ISAF soldier in the south.
