Yemen

Tribesmen loyal to President Saleh claimed to have captured 10 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters near the town of Shoqra. Tribesmen also accused Abdul Majid al Zindani of sending more than 300 al Qaeda fighters to battle Yemeni forces in Arhab and Naham.


Somalia

A clinic in northern Mogadishu was evacuated and civilians in two districts fled as Shabaab and government forces clashed in the area. The government said it would continue to pursue Shabaab fighters.


Nigeria

Police killed a suicide bomber before he could detonate his car bomb after he rammed a police station in Maiduguri. Police believe he is a member of Boko Haram.



Pakistan

Twelve “militants” were killed in an IED attack in Khyber. US Predators killed four “militants” in a strike in North Waziristan. A Taliban commander was captured in Karachi.




Iraq

Terrorists dressed as soldiers pulled seven men from a mosque in Yusafiyah and executed them. Four policemen were killed in a mortar attack in Musayab.


Yemen

Security forces killed 26 people, including 14 women and children, in attacks in Arhab. Five al Qaeda fighters were killed in an airstrike in Abyan. Rival al Qaeda groups clashed in Jaar.


Iran

The Indian Navy seized a ship that recently left Iran and is carrying weapons thought to be destined for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Yemen. Iran denied that one of its vessels was seized. Iran urged the international community not to interfere with Syria’s “internal affairs.”


Syria

Security forces continued their assault on the port city of Latakia. More than 35 Syrians have been killed since troops and navy gunboats attacked the city on Aug. 13.


Egypt

Security forces detained four men who attempted to plant explosives on a gas pipeline in Al Arish in the Sinai. The pipeline has been attacked five times this year.


Somalia

Uganda may send an additional 2,000 soldiers to join African Union forces in Mogadishu. Naval forces reportedly intercepted a ship carrying weapons from Yemen to Shabaab fighters in Somalia.





Afghanistan

A suicide assault team killed four civilian guards in an attack on a fuel depot in Kandahar. Four Taliban fighters and a policeman were killed as the Taliban attempted to overrun a district center in Ghazni. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, Ghazni, Khost, and Logar.



Iraq

Insurgents killed over 60 people in attacks throughout Iraq. More than 30 Iraqis were killed in Al Kut, and two policemen were killed as they stopped a pair of suicide bombers from freeing al Qaeda prisoners from a jail in Tikrit.


Yemen

One person was killed in a bombing at a Houthi base in Al Jawf province. A government official blamed opposition leader Hamid al Ahmar for the June assassination attempt that seriously wounded President Saleh.


Lebanon

Police have recaptured one of the five Fatah al Islam members who escaped from the Roumieh prison. Two prison officers and nine guards were detained. Authorities believe the escapees had inside help.


Egypt

The Muslim Brotherhood warned the ruling government not to interfere with the writing of a new constitution. The Muslim Brotherhood believes the military will limit who can draft the document and maintain a role in politics.


Somalia

Ten people were killed during fighting between Shabaab forces and government troops near Beledweyne. Shabaab announced it is conducting hit-and-run attacks in Mogadishu.


Pakistan

Pakistan allowed China to inspect the wreckage of the US stealth helicopter that crashed during the raid to kill Osama bin Laden. Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide assault team killed 16 civilians and six policemen in an attack in Parwan; seven Taliban fighters were also killed. The Taliban killed three ISAF soldiers in the east. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Khost, and Faryab.



Yemen

Seventeen al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters and three soldiers were killed during fighting in Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province. Tribesmen in Abyan claimed the government is arming AQAP. The Islamist Islah party and the Shia Houthis signed a ceasefire agreement.


Syria

Syria warships have shelled the port city of Latakia, where anti-regime protesters have held protests. Tanks and artillery have also been used. Nineteen people have been killed.


Libya

Libyan rebels claimed to control more than 70 percent of the town of Zawiyah and are advancing on the town of Gharyan. Fighting also continues in Brega. Rebels claimed to have taken control of the town of Tawurgha.


Somalia

Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamoud Rage insisted that the group’s fighters remain in Mogadishu. One soldier was killed during fighting with the Ras Kamboni Brigade in Dhobley.
