Iraq

Insurgents killed two civilians in attacks in Mosul and Baqubah. Security forces detained a military commander of al Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq in Wasit.


Yemen

The Yemeni government claimed it has retaken control of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, and ejected al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula from other towns in the area. The military has also broken the three-month-long siege of the 25th Mechanized Brigade just outside of Zinjibar.


Somalia

Four people were killed in a bombing at the second largest market in Mogadishu. A Shabaab official called journalists from Shabelle, Radio Mogadishu, VOA and BBC “apostates.”



Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Osama bin Laden sought to use five French hostages captured by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in Niger to discredit President Sarkozy. Bin Laden issued written, personal guidance to AQIM on how the hostages were to be handled.


Nigeria

Security officials said Shabaab and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb were involved in the suicide attack on the UN headquarters in Abua. Officials said Mamman Nur, the tactical commander who is linked to al Qaeda, was in Somalia before the attack.


Egypt

Egyptians stormed the Israeli embassy in Cairo, forcing the ambassador, his staff, and families to flee. Three Egyptians were killed as police clashed with the rioters.

Pakistan

The interior ministry warned of a plot by the Taliban to kidnap a government official in order to free Osama bin Laden’s family. A Pakistani man pleaded guilty in a US court to plotting to send nuclear technology to his home country.


United Kingdom

A court sentenced Pakistani-born British citizen Munir Farooqi to life in prison for plotting terror attacks, soliciting murder, and disseminating jihadi propaganda. Farooqi radicalized and recruited young Muslims to wage jihad.


Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed seven people in Helmand. The Taliban killed three ISAF soldiers in the east and another in the south, and a Turkish citizen in Herat. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, Logar, and Faryab.


Iraq

Insurgents killed an Iraqi soldier in Mosul. Security forces arrested 22 wanted men in Basrah. Iran claimed it killed 123 PJAK fighters, including the deputy military commander, during shelling in Iraq over the past month.


Somalia

Somalia’s prime minister said the government is willing to negotiate with Shabaab. A Somali soldier killed six civilians who sought food aid in Somalia.


Libya

Interpol issued arrest warrants for President Gaddafi, his son Saif al Islam, and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi. Another convoy of Gaddafi loyalists has entered Niger.



Philippines

A spokesman for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front said that terrorist Abdul Basit Usman has been seen with the forces of dissident MILF leader Ameril Umbra Kato. Usman, who is linked to both the Abu Sayyaf Group and Jemaah Islamiyah, is wanted by the US. Security forces captured an Abu Sayyaf fighter in Basilan.


United States

US counterterrorism officials warned of an attack threat that involved car or truck bombings on Sept. 11. Officials said the information on the threat is “specific, credible, but unconfirmed.”


Germany

Police in Berlin arrested two men who were involved in a bomb plot after raids on a mosque and residences in the capital. One man is a German from Lebanon, the other is a Palestinian from Gaza.


India

The Indian Mujahideen claimed credit for the bombing outside the Delhi High Court that killed 13 people, and threatened to carry out another bombing in a shopping mall. Six suspects have been detained.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed two ISAF soldiers in the south and a Turkish citizen in Herat. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Khost, Nangarhar, and Kunduz. US troops accidentally killed a Pajhwok reporter while fighting the Taliban in Uruzgan on July 28.


China

The al Qaeda-linked Turkistan Islamic Party claimed responsibility for attacks in western China that killed more than 30 people. The announcement was made by Abdul Shakoor Turkistani, the new leader of the TIP, who is based in Pakistan.


Iraq

US Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno said the US “had to be careful about leaving too many people in Iraq” to avoid the perception of an occupation. Iraqi forces detained six “wanted men” in Amara.


Somalia

Officials from the semi-autonomous region of Puntland captured 18 Shabaab fighters in Galkayo. Shabaab and government forces clashed in Luq.


Pakistan

A pair of suicide bombers killed 24 people in Quetta, including the wife of the deputy commander of Baluchistan Frontier Corps. The Taliban claimed it carried out the attack because the Frontier Corps captured al Qaeda leader Younis al Mauritani.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed six Afghan soldiers in attacks in Kandahar, Badghis, and Logar, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and IMU fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Wardak, Khost, and Kunduz.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two Awakening leaders in Diyala and Dijail. Police captured five terrorists involved in the Ramadan bombing in Al Kut that killed 40 people.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula took control of Rodwa in Shabwa province, and is advancing on the port of Balhaf, home to a Liquefied Natural Gas facility. AQAP killed six soldiers in Zinjibar. US Predators reportedly killed three AQAP fighters in the village of Mihfed.


US Treasury lists 3 senior al Qaeda leaders as terrorists

The al Qaeda leaders were identified as Younis al Mauritani, a senior member of the external operations council who was recently arrested in Pakistan; Hassan Ghul, a key facilitator who was freed by the Pakistanis in 2007; and Abu Yahya al Libi, a top ideologue.


Somalia

Three people were killed in artillery attacks in Mogadishu. Two Kenyan soldiers have been declared missing in action after accidentally entering Somalia in late July.


Nigeria

A senior government official claimed that the military and police have detained more than 300 Boko Haram members during raids. The government estimates that Bobo Haram has 500 members.
