Iraq

Insurgents killed a policeman in Kirkuk. Three children were killed after moving an explosive device to their home. The military said that “foreign Arabs” were responsible for the execution of 22 Shia in Anbar.


Yemen

Government troops killed 20 protesters in Sana’a. The capital is under blackout after power lines were cut. The opposition denied Sheikh Zindani is a terrorist.


Somalia

The government has banned all aid workers from entering Shabaab-held areas to distribute famine relief. Shabaab claimed to have captured three soldiers in Mogadishu.


Nigeria

Boko Haram released two videotapes of the suicide bomber who attacked the UN headquarters in Abuja. A relative of the slain former leader of Boko Haram was gunned down in Maiduguri.




Afghanistan

Security forces killed more than 70 Taliban fighters in Nuristan, and killed and captured several more in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Paktia, Logar, Wardak, Baghlan, and Faryab. The Taliban killed nine civilians, including five children, in Faryab, and two ISAF soldiers in the south.




Iraq

Iraqi troops killed three men armed with weapons and suicide belts in the western city of Haditha. Insurgents killed a policeman in Fallujah and a civilian in Baghdad.


Yemen

Government forces killed six protesters in the capital of Sana’a. Saudi officials said that President Saleh, who has been recovering from injuries sufferred in an attack three months ago, may not return to Yemen.


Somalia

Unidentified aircraft launched airstrikes on suspected Shabaab training camps near Kismayo. Three people were killed during fighting between Shabaab and government forces in Mogadishu.


Mali

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters are said to be moving into the Wagadou Forest near the Mauritanian border. Residents are fleeing the area in anticipation of a security operation.


Algeria

The US State Department warned of an al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb plot to shoot down airliners chartered by oil companies in the country. AQIM is believe to be in possession of Russian-made SAM-7 anti-aircraft missiles.



Iraq

Security forces detained two al Qaeda fighters in Kirkuk. Two Iranians were found dead in Baghdad. The Iraqi Air Force is close to purchasing 18 US-made F-16 fighters.


Somalia

Government forces prevented aid workers from entering Shabaab-held areas south of the capital. Shabaab reportedly took heavy losses during recent fighting in El Waq.


Niger

The military killed three al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters during clashes near the Libyan border. The military released 59 “young fighters” who belong to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.


Uganda

A court sentenced two Ugandans linked to Shabaab to prison for their involvement in the July 2010 suicide attacked that killed 76 people in Kampala. Edris Nsubuga was sentenced to 25 years after admitting to planting the explosives; Muhamoud Mugisha was sentenced to five years for conspiracy.


Thailand

Five soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Pattani. Three civilians were killed in three car and motorcycle bombings in Sungai Kolok.




India

The US added the Indian Mujahideen to the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. The US State Department described the the terror group as “an India-based terrorist group with significant links to Pakistan.”


Pakistan

A suicide bomber killed 31 Pakistanis who were attending a funeral in Lower Dir. The Taliban killed three military intelligence officials in an IED attack in Bannu.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed four policemen in a bombing in Paktika. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, Paktia, and Faryab.


Iraq

Insurgents killed a traffic officer and a civilian in attacks in Baghdad. Security forces captured 11 suspects thought to be involved in the massacre of 22 Shia travelers near Rutbah.


Yemen

Four people were killed as government forces shelled areas of Sana’a under the control of Sheikh Ahmar, who opposes President Saleh. A young man was killed during three bombings in Aden.


Somalia

Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali called for the UN Security Council to send an additional 3,000 troops. Shabaab denied it was behind the kidnapping of a Briton in Kenya.


Nigeria

Police killed three Boko Haram fighters who attacked a divisional police station and a bank in Misau on Sept. 12; five policemen and a civilian were killed during the fighting. Boko Haram fighters killed three people in Maiduguri.
