Five people were killed during mortar exchanges between Shabaab and government forces in Mogadishu. The African Union claimed it seized “critical high ground” in Mogadishu.

Indonesia

Police arrested three “Islamist militants” in the capital of Jakarta. One of the men was involved in a bombing in April that wounded 30 policemen in Cirebon.

Philippines

Soldiers captured two members of the Abu Sayyaf Group in Zamboanga Sibugay. MILF expelled commander Ameril Umbra Kato, who formed the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement.

Pakistan

The US White House said cooperation with Pakistan is vital. Security forces killed four Taliban fighters in Swat and arrested three more in Islamabad, and detained three German nationals in Jhelum. The Taliban bombed a NATO fuel tanker in Khyber.

Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Helmand, Zabul, Ghazni, Khost, Paktia, and Kunduz. Also, security forces killed a Taliban district-level shadow governor in Kandahar.

Iraq

Two bomb blasts at the Rumaila oil field in Basrah forced Iraq to halve the production of oil produced at Iraq’s largest facility. Production was cut by 600,000 barrels from an estimated 1.25 million barrels per day.

Yemen

President Saleh claimed he will step down over the next several days. The commander of the 25th Mechanized Brigade claimed al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula will be driven from Abyan in the next several days. A policemen was killed in a bombing in Aden.

Somalia

Twelve people were killed during heavy fighting between Shabaab and government forces in northern Mogadishu. The African Union claimed it controls 95 percent of Mogadishu.

Nigeria

Customers at a tea shop, aided by police, killed two Boko Haram fighters after disarming them. Boko Haram killed two tea shop owners earlier in the week.

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Logar, and Balkh. The Taliban killed a US soldier in the south. A suicide bomber killed only himself in an attack on a US base in Paktika.

Pakistan

Afghan president Hamid Karzai said the Taliban “can’t move a finger” without Pakistani support. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said the US is responsible for the security situation in Pakistan.

Iraq

Insurgents killed five civilians and a policeman in Baghdad and a civilian in Mosul. Security forces arrested a council official in Daqouk on terrorism charges. US Defense Secretary Panetta said US troops must have immunity to remain in Iraq.
