Afghanistan

The Taliban killed two British soldiers in an IED attack in Helmand. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Khost, Paktia, and Logar.

Iraq

Iraq executed a Tunisian al Qaeda operative who was involved in the 2006 bombing of the Golden mosques in Samarra; one Egyptian and nine Iraqis were also executed for terrorism charges. Muqtada al Sadr said he supports Syrian President Bashir al Assad.


Yemen

President Saleh claims he will step down in 90 days. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula assassinated an army colonel in Aden.


Somalia

The African Union will work with Kenya to battle Shabaab. The deputy chairman of Kenya’s parliament said his country would not advance on Kismayo. Six people were killed in food riots in Mogadishu.





Al Qaeda

Ayman al Zawahiri, the emir of al Qaeda, released a videotape that commemorated his predecessor, Osama bin Laden. “People don’t know that this man was tender, gentle, kind, with refined feelings, even when life was hard,” Zawahiri said.


Pakistan

US Predators killed 18 Taliban and “foreign fighters” in an airstrike in North Waziristan. Security forces killed 16 Taliban fighters during fighting yesterday in Arakzai. Five “terrorists” and two policemen were killed during a clash in Karachi.

Karzai says Afghanistan needs future pact with US but says night raids must end

President Karzai said the US must end night raids before a status of forces deal can be negotiated. The US killed 27 Taliban fighters in an airstrike in Nangarhar. Yemen

Yesterday, Yemeni troops killed seven AQAP fighters, including an Iranian, a Pakistani, and two Somali nationals, during fighting in Zinjibar. AQAP remains in control of the provincial capital.


Somalia

Two people were killed during fighting between Shabaab and government forces in Mogadishu. Shabaab said Kenya “failed” in its attempt to secure the south.


Nigeria

President Jonathan Goodluck called for Boko Haram fighters to lay down their arms, and promised “mercy.” Boko Haram detonated an IED on a highway in Maiduguri.

Afghanistan

The Taliban killed one policeman in a donkey bomb attack in Faryab. Security forces captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Helmand and Khost. Twenty-nine percent of Afghans sympathize with the Taliban, while 82 percent support reconciliation.


Iraq

Insurgents killed a policeman and a doctor in Mosul, and a US soldier in central Iraq. The government approved a $17.2 billion deal for Royal Dutch Shell PLC to process gas in Basrah.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula captured the town of Al Khoud in Abtan province. AQAP took control of the town after resisting strikes by the Yemeni Air Force.


Egypt

Security forces detained two men in El Arish linked to the attack on a gas pipeline on the Sinai Peninsula that supplies gas to Israel and Jordan. The men belong to Al Takfir awl Hijra.


Kenya

Israel is prepared to support the Kenyan government to battle Shabaab in southern Somalia. “Kenya’s enemies are Israel’s enemies so we should be able to help,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said. “We have similar forces planning to bring us down.”
