Turkey

Police detained 15 suspected al Qaeda operatives during raids at several locations in the city of Konya. Police did not provide further details on the al Qaeda suspects.


Iraq

The US has transferred all detainees, save Hezbollah leader Musa Ali Daqduq, over to Iraqi control. Police killed a suicide bomber in Mosul.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

The military said 19 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters, including two Somalis, an Algerian, and an Egyptian, were killed in fighting near Zinjibar. “Gunmen” kidnapped two foreigners and their driver in Lahj province.



Somalia

Shabaab killed 11 people in a bombing in Mogadishu. Two Shabaab fighters were killed in a premature detonation. The Kenyan Air Force killed a woman in a strike in Somalia near the border.




Afghanistan

The Taliban killed four Afghan soldiers in Zabul, Paktia, Wardak, and Faryab. Afghan forces killed five Taliban fighters in Helmand and Ghazni, and detained five more.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two Kurdish troops in Kirkuk. Security forces arrested a “terrorist” involved in assassinations in Mosul. A parliamentary committee said the Iraqi Air Force needs five years before it can defend Iraqi airspace.


Yemen

Tribesmen captured 400 soldiers from President Saleh’s 63rd Republican Guard Brigade and took control of the unit’s base near Arhab. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula released new images of Anwar al Awlaki and Samir Khan.


Somalia

Shabaab claimed it attacked Kenyan warships with “high power speed boats” off the coast of Kismayo. Ethiopian troops were spotted moving towards Guriel.


Pakistan

Security forces killed seven Taliban fighters in Arakzai. Police captured four “terrorists” involved in a grenade attack on the Saudi consulate in Karachi. The Taliban torched trucks in Dasht carrying supplies for NATO forces.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand, Zabul, Paktia, and Nangarhar, and detained a suicide bomber in Herat. Afghan special forces killed two Taliban leaders and 14 fighters while attempting to retake Kamdesh district in Nuristan.


Uzbekistan

A suspected bombing took place on a rail line in southern Uzbekistan. The railway is used to transport supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan. No group has claimed credit for the blast.


Iraq

Insurgents killed five policemen during an attack on a police checkpoint in Ramadi; three insurgents were also killed. An Iraqi security official claimed US troops killed two civilians after opening fire following an IED attack in Yusifiyah.


Somalia

The African Union said it repelled Shabaab attacks in several districts in Mogadishu. Ethiopia denied its military crossed the Somali frontier to battle Shabaab.


Kenya

Police in Hagadera arrested three Muslim clerics who are accused of preaching jihad and recruiting for Shabaab at the Dadaab Refugee Camp. Police also arrested two men thought to be involved in the kidnapping of two aid workers in Dadaab.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed an al Qaeda facilitator in Wardak and captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Kandahar and Khost. US troops killed two Afghan policemen during a standoff at a checkpoint in Ghazni.


Yemen

“Gunmen” killed a police officer in Mukallah. A refinery in Aden shut down after tribesmen bombed an oil pipeline in Marib. Reuters fired a reporter who worked for President Saleh.


Somalia

The Kenyan military said 28 Shabaab fighters and eight Kenyan soldiers have been killed during fighting in the south over the past several days; one soldier is listed as missing. Hundreds of Ethiopian troops were spotted crossing into Somalia.



ISAF kills al Qaeda ‘facilitator’ in Afghan east

The al Qaeda facilitator “trained insurgents and worked as a courier.” He was killed in the same district in Wardak where 31 US troops, including 17 Navy SEALs, and seven Afghan troops were killed when their helicopter was shot down in August.



Iraq

Insurgents killed five people in a bombing outside a policeman’s home in Saqlawiyah and four Iraqis in bombing outside three mosques in Abu Ghraib. Iraq is discussing with the UN the closure of the MEK’s Camp Arshaf.


2 Brits thought killed in US drone strike in Pakistan

The families of Ibrahim Adam and Mohammed Azmir said they were killed in a strike in the Waziristan region three months ago. Azmir was the brother of a senior al Qaeda leader who also killed in Pakistan. Adam fled Briton while under a controversial “control order” for terrorism charges.




Shabaab

Shabaab has an estimated 750 to 1,000 “foreign fighters” in its ranks, according to an estimate by a Kenyan military official. The official also said al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is actively supporting Shabaab.


Somalia

Kenyan troops killed 12 Shabaab fighters and have advanced to the outskirts of Afmadow. Four civilians were killed during fighting between Shabaab and government forces in Mogadishu.


Kenya

Kenya has requested US assistance in its fight against Shabaab in southern Somalia. The request includes US military intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assistance. Kenya may provide troops to the African Union mission in Somalia.
