Iraq

Twenty-two Iraqis were killed in a car bomb attack that targeted Shia pilgrims in Hillah. Most of those killed were women and children; more than 60 civilians were wounded.


Somalia

Prime Minister Ali said the Somali government is ready to negotiate with Shabaab. Four people were killed as Kenyan troops clashed with Shabaab fighters in Qoogani. A security guard was killed after “gunmen” attack a Turkish hospital in Mogadishu.


Kenya

A policeman was killed and three more were wounded in an IED attack on their vehicle at the Daadab refugee camp. Shabaab is known to operate at the camp.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters and commanders in Kandahar, Helmand, Khost, Nangarhar, and Kapisa. India pledged to train more than 30,000 Afghan troops. Australia said it may withdraw its troops prior to 2014.


Iran

The Iranian military claimed it shot down a US stealth RQ-170 drone in eastern Iran. ISAF said one of its UAVs crashed in western Afghanistan and said there was no indication it was shot down.


Iraq

Insurgents killed four policemen in Abu Ghraib. Two insurgents were killed in a premature detonation. Iraq is seeking help from Gulf countries to secure its airspace.


Somalia

Shabaab shut down medical clinics in Afgoye. Somalia was listed along with North Korea as the most corrupt nations on the planet.


Nigeria

Boko Haram killed six policemen in an attack on police stations and a bank in Azare in Bauchi state. The father of Boko Haram spokesman Usman Al-Zawahiri said his son is insane.



Egypt

Egypt’s Vote Propels Islamic Law Into Spotlight






Iraq

Insurgents killed eight Iraqis in attacks in Taji and Sharqat. The government executed six terrorists. The US has transferred control of the Victory base complex to the Iraqi military.


Somalia

Kenyan warplanes attacked Shabaab bases in Bardhere; no casualties have been reported. Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Abu Musab said the terror group would conduct further suicide attacks in Mogadishu.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Security forces detained Mohamed Salem Ould Mohamed Lemine, a radical Salafist preacher who supports al Qaeda, during a raid in Nouakchott. Eighteen other Salafists were also arrested.



Afghanistan

The Taliban killed three Afghan police in Baghlan and kidnapped seven Pakistani engineers in Logar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters and commanders in Kandahar, Ghazni, Khost, Paktia, Paktika, Lorgar, Wardak, and Nangarhar. Twelve insurgents reconciled with the government in Balkh.



Iraq

Insurgents killed 10 Iraqis in a bombing in Khalis and eight more in shootings that targeted the families of former Awakening officials in Buhriz. An insurgent died in a premature detonation while planting an IED in Mosul.




Pakistan

The military killed 12 “militants” during fighting in Kurram. The Taliban killed the head of a “peace committee” in Hangu.


Afghanistan

ISAF said Pakistan has resumed some cooperation to prevent border incidents. Security forces captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, Logar, and Wardak. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


Iraq

Anbar’s provincial council said it would declare autonomy in the next week. Prime Minister Maliki said Iraq would accept US soldiers as military trainers. Insurgents killed a policeman in Mosul and five civilians in Samarra.




Somalia

A Shabaab suicide bomber killed five people in an attack on a military base in Mogadishu. Shabaab killed six civilians in an IED attack and dismembered two men accused of robbery in Lafole.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several al Qaeda and Taliban operatives in Kandahar, Ghazni, Khost, Paktika, Nangarhar, and Wardak. The Taliban killed an Afghan soldier in Baghlan. President Karzai urged Pakistan to attend the Bonn conference.
