Afghanistan

Twenty-three Taliban fighters were killed during operations in Nangarhar, Logar, and Zabul. Nighty-eight insurgents reconciled with the government in Ghor and Badakhshan.


Yemen

Officials said that six al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters were killed in airstrikes in Lawdar and four more were killed in Ja’ar. Pakistan has delayed the deportation of Osama bin Laden’s wives and children to Yemen.



Somalia

A suicide bomber killed two Somali soldiers in Baidoa. Kenyan troops are reported to be advancing on Afmadow. Ethiopia said it would soon begin withdrawing its troops from Somalia.


Nigeria

The US said that Boko Haram is planning to conduct attacks in Abuja, “including against hotels frequently visited by Westerners.” “Gunmen” killed a police inspector and a former customs official in Maiduguri.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

An Italian woman who was kidnapped by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in southern Algeria in February 2011 has been freed. No details have been released on the ransom paid by the Italian government.


Afghanistan

Australia announced that it would withdraw its forces by the end of 2013. More than 140 schoolgirls were poisoned in Takhar province. The Taliban killed two Afghan soldiers in an IED attack in Nimroz. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Kandahar, Wardak, and Paktia.


Yemen

An al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula suicide bomber killed three people in Abyan. AQAP threatened to kill the Saudi diplomat who was kidnapped on March 28.



Somalia

A suicide bomber attacked a security headquarters in Baidoa, killing one official. Shabaab claimed three Ethiopian soldiers and two Somali troops were killed in the suicide attack.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Ansar al Din is said to be planning to name al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb leader Yahya About al Hammam as the emir of Timbuktu. Hammam was recently spotted in Timbuktu with two other top AQIM leaders.


Nigeria

Soldiers from the Joint Task Force killed one Boko Haram fighter and detained 13 others during raids in the northern city of Maiduguri. Troops also found IEDs and weapons.


Afghanistan

Thirty-Six Taliban fighters, eight Afghan security personnel, and three civilians were killed during the Taliban’s coordinated assault in Kabul and three provinces. US and Afghan officials said the Haqqani Network was behind the attack. ISAF troops killed an Afghan soldier after he opened fire on a convoy in Kandahar.


Yemen

US drones killed five al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in a strike in Azzan in Shabwa province. AQAP is in control of Shabwa. Forty inmates were wounded during riots at a prison in Hajjah.



Somalia

Shabaab warned the British government that it would “be held accountable for the consequences of its actions” if Abu Qatada is deported to Jordan. Security officials said the government detained 50 Shabaab fighters in Mogadishu.


Nigeria

Boko Haram fighters killed two people in a shooting in Maiduguri and wounded three more in an IED attack in Kano. Security forces arrested 50 foreign nationals from Niger, Chad, and Mali after Boko Haram threatened the government.



Pakistan

The Taliban assaulted a prison in Bannu and freed nearly 400 inmates, including Adnan Rasheed, who was involved with an assassination attempt of president Pervez Musharraf. Two soldiers were wounded in a suicide attack in South Waziristan.


Yemen

US drones reportedly killed a senior al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula commander in Baydah province. AQAP killed three children in an IED attack in Aden.



Somalia

Somali forces claimed to have defeated Shabaab in the southern district of Afmadow; seven Shabaab fighters were said to have been killed. Several members of Prime Minister Abdiweli’s security detail are reported to have been detained for involvement in a suicide attack at a theater in Mogadishu.


Nigeria

Boko Haram reportedly executed Mohammed Anwal Kontagora, its new spokesman. Kontagora, who assumed the name of Abu Qaqa, is said to had been killed for plans to defect.





Afghanistan

Security forces killed an IMU leader and several fighters in Takhar, and killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand, Khost, Paktia, Logar, and Wardak. The son of Burhuddin Rabbani has been named the new leader of the Afghan High Peace Council.



Iraq

Insurgents killed two Iraqi policemen in an IED attack in Khaldiyah in Anbar province. Two members of the election commission were detained on corruption charges.


Yemen

US drones killed 21 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in two separate strikes on April 11 and today. Yemeni troops killed 28 AQAP fighters near Lawdar. Five soldiers and eight AQAP fighters were killed in Aden.
