Pakistan

US drones killed five “militants” in North Waziristan. Security forces killed four Taliban fighters in Arakzai. The Taliban killed a soldier in an IED attack in Nowshera. Secretary of Defense Panetta said that the US will not be “gouged” by Pakistan on the reopening of NATO’s supply lines.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed seven ISAF soldiers, an Afghan Army commander, and two civilians in separate attacks in the south and east. Afghan officials said eight civilians, including six children, were killed in an ISAF airstrike in Paktia.


Yemen

Security forces killed 15 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Jaar and seven more in Zinjibar. The chief of security in Aden said AQAP has infiltrated the city. AQAP offered to free a Swiss and a Saudi hostage in exchange for a ceasefire.


Somalia

Puntland’s Maritime Police Force captured 11 pirates in the Hafun district. The commander of Somalia’s military said that the armed forces are preparing to eject Shabaab out Lower and Middle Shabelle.



Tunisia

Hundreds of Salafists armed with Molotov cocktails and clubs fought with police in Jendouba, torched a police headquarters, and attacked liquor stores and bars. The Salafists were protesting the arrest of four of their ranks for previously attacking bars.


Afghanistan

Residents of Ghazni killed 11 Taliban fighters in a local uprising. Five Taliban fighters and a civilian were killed in fighting in Helmand. The Taliban killed a British soldier in Helmand.


Iraq

Insurgents killed three soldiers in an IED attack in Badoush near Mosul. A Brigadier General in the Interior Ministry was gunned down in Baghdad.


Yemen

The military said it killed 62 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters and retook key positions east of the city of Zinjibar. AQAP claimed credit for yesterday’s suicide attack that killed 12 Houthis in Al Jawf, and released a video of a captive Saudi diplomat.


Somalia

Shabaab forces deserted the city of Afgoye, which is just outside of Mogadishu, without a fight. Somali and African Union forces entered Afgoye yesterday afternoon. A Shabaab spokesman described the withdrawal as a tactical retreat.




Nigeria

Boko Haram is suspected of killing a Muslim cleric and a prison guard in Potiskum in Yobe state. The Joint Task Force said Boko Haram is plotting to conduct attacks on May 29 in Borno.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed nine civilians in IED attacks in Helmand and Ghazni, two policemen in Uruzgan, and an ISAF soldier in the east. Security forces killed eight Afghan soldiers in Nangarhar.

Yemen

A suicide bomber killed 12 Shia in a bombing at a Houthi mosque in Al Hazm, the capital of Al Jawf province. Ansar al Sharia reportedly said the name of the Sana’a suicide bomber is a Yemeni soldier named Haitham Hamid Hussein Mufarih.


Somalia

Three civilians were killed in a blast at a mosque in Galkayo. Shabaab arrested khat traders in Afmadow. Somali and African Union forces are just two miles outside of the Shabaab stronghold of Afgoye.



Afghanistan

Security forces killed 17 Taliban fighters and detained 54 more in Helmand, Zabul, Uruzgan, Logar, Ghazni, Khost, Kabul, Nangarhar, and Takhar. Special operations forces captured an IMU facilitator in Badakhshan. A suicide bomber killed two policemen in Helmand.


Yemen

The Yemeni military claimed that 35 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters were killed in Abyan and Lahj. A former minister called for the government to negotiate with AQAP and its political front, Ansar al Sharia.


Somalia

The Kenya Defence Force said it would reach Kismayo next month. Gunmen killed a Turkish citizen and a Somali reporter for Shabelle in Mogadishu.


Shabaab

A photo of Omar Hammami, the American who has served as a commander, propagandist, and recruiter for Shabaab, has been released on the Internet. The photo shows Hammami with a copy of his autobiography, which was released last week.




US drones kill 10 in Mir Ali strike

The strike is the second in two days and targeted a compound in an area of North Waziristan known to serve as a nexus for al Qaeda, the Taliban, and other jihadist groups.


Pakistan

A Pakistani court sentenced the doctor who helped the CIA find and kill Osama bin Laden to 33 years in prison. US drones killed four “militants” in North Waziristan. The Pakistani Air Force killed 12 Taliban fighters in strikes in Arakzai.


Only in Pakistan…

…can the man who helped the US kill Osama bin Laden get 33 years in prison, while terrorists like Hafiz Saeed walk free.



Afghanistan

Security forces killed the Taliban’s deputy shadow governor for Nuristan. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. Two foreign aid workers and three Afghans were kidnapped in Badakhshan. More than 120 schoolgirls were poisoned in Takhar.
