Pakistan

The Taliban killed 10 civilians in an IED attack in Arakzai. Security forces killed nine Taliban fighters in Chitral. Tribesmen and clerics in North Waziristan said polio vaccinations would be halted until the US ends drone strikes in Pakistan.


Afghanistan

Security forces killed 25 Taliban fighters during operations nationwide. Nine Afghan soldiers and seven Taliban fighters were killed during clashes in Helmand. The Taliban killed two ISAF soldiers in the east and destroyed 22 NATO fuel and supply trucks in an attack in Samangan province.



Yemen

Two al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters and an Army officer were killed in separate clashes. Police arrested members of an “Iranian spy cell” run by the IRGC. President Hadi urged Iran to cease interfering in Yemen.


Somalia

Security forces killed 11 Shabaab fighters during clashes in Bardhare. President Sharif has been sheltering a wanted pirate leader, according to a UN report. President Sharif accused the UN group that issued the report of being “against peace in Somalia.”

Algeria

The Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa has freed two Spanish and an Italian hostage. The three aid workers were kidnapped in Tindouf, Algeria in October 2011. A man who was arrested in connection with the kidnapping was freed by the Algerian government.



Philippines

Police captured Hadjer Arasani, an Abu Sayyaf operative, during a raid in the city of Lamitan in Basilan province. Arasani was involved int he kidnapping of six Jehovah’s Witnesses and the murder of a police officer.


Thailand

Two Islamist fighters, a soldiers and two civilians were killed during fighting in the Rueso district in Narathiwat province. The Islamist fighters attacked a military checkpoint in the district, but were repelled.

Afghanistan

Twelve Taliban fighters, four policemen, three civilians, and an ISAF soldier were killed in fighting. The Afghan soldier who murdered four French troops in Kapisa earlier this year has been sentenced to death. More than 100 Taliban fighters in Badghis reconciled with the government.


Yemen

A soldier from Central Security was captured while smuggling an explosive belt into a military camp. The soldier was preparing to detonate it during a parade on July 17.



Senegal

Security forces detained 10 suspected al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters during an operation in Dagana, a town along the Mauritanian border. Ten imams and students suspected of plotting terror attacks were detained in Matam.

Shabaab claimed credit for yesterday’s attack that killed a former cabinet minister and member of parliament. Shabaab hit Ethiopian troops in Beledweyne with IED attacks.


Nigeria

A student was killed in a bombing outside of a government office in Jos. One person was killed in an attack outside of an Islamic school in Jos. Police found a bomb factory in Kogi.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 10 Afghans in attacks in Kunduz, Ghazni, and Kandahar, beheaded three soldiers in Nuristan, and killed two ISAF soldiers in the south. The defense ministry is investigating claims of a truce between Afghan soldiers and the Taliban in Uruzgan.


Yemen

Gunmen killed a prison director, his daughter, and two guards in an attack on a convoy in Taiz. Yemeni Salafists are seeking a greater role in the country’s political transition.
