Afghanistan

Two Afghan security personnel killed six of their fellow policemen in an attack in Helmand. A man dressed in an Afghan police uniform killed three more policemen in Khost. Two pro-government tribal elders were gunned down in Helmand. French forces are speeding up their withdrawal.


Iraq

Seventeen Iraqis were killed in two bombings just minutes apart that targeted Shiites in Baghdad. A Canadian judge ruled that a citizen who was involved in at least two suicide attacks in Iraq could be extradited to the US.


Yemen

US drones killed Sheikh Abu Zubeir ‘Adil al’Abab, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s senior sharia official, in a strike on Oct. 4. Security forces seized a parcel in Sana’a that contained explosives and bomb-making material.


Somalia

Several people were killed in an IED attack in Baidoa. A civilian was gunned down in Kismayo. Twenty people were wounded in a bombing at a wedding in Mogadishu.


Nigeria

Boko Haram fighters reportedly killed 23 people in a series of attacks in the northeastern city of Potiskum. Several buildings were also destroyed in the fighting.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

A letter purportedly written by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb emir Abdelmalek Droukdel indicates that the organization is fractured and disorganized. “The organization is sick,” Droukdel’s letter supposedly said.




Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 15 civilians in an IED attack in Balkh. President Karzai said immunity for US soldiers is unlikely after security is fully transitioned in 2014.



Iraq

Four Pakistani Shia pilgrims and a police officer were killed in bombings in Balad and Diyala. Military intelligence forces captured members of “a terrorist cell” in Baghdad.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula launched a complex suicide assault on an Army brigade headquarters in Shaqra. Fourteen soldiers, including three colonels, and 12 AQAP fighters were killed during the attack.


Somalia

Puntland security forces seized weapons thought to have been shipped from Yemen that were destined for Shabaab. “Gunmen” killed a tribal elder in Kismayo. Shabaab claimed it assassinated an intelligence official in Mogadishu.

Afghanistan

The Taliban dismissed a report that Mullah Omar has died or is mentally ill. President Karzai said NATO can speed up the security transition. Two Taliban fighters died in a premature detonation. Anti-Taliban uprisings have been reported in Kabul province.


Yemen

US drones killed an al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader and eight fighters in a strike in Jaar in Abyan province. The leader of an anti-AQAP Popular Resistance Committees died in a car accident.




Somalia

Government forces clashed amongst themselves in Lambar-konton. President Mohamud said that the war against Shabaab would continue. “Gunmen” killed a government official in Mogadishu.




US adds IMU financier, Taliban IED experts to terror list

Qari Ayyub Bashir is the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan’s top financier; Maulawi Adam Khan Achekzai is a senior Taliban IED expert and leader; and Aamir Ali Chaudhry is an electronics and explosives expert for the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan who was involved in the Times Square plot.



Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber wounded 45 Afghan soldiers in an attack on a base in Paktia. One of the two US personnel killed in last weekend’s green-on-blue suicide attack at an NDS headquarters in Kandahar was a CIA officer. The Taliban killed three civilians in the west.


Pakistan

The Taliban denied government claims that Qari Saeed, its emir for Arakzai, was captured in Nowshera. Police arrested the emir of the Sindh branch of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi; he has been arrested in the past.


Iraq

Insurgents killed five Iraqis and wounded 15 more in separate attacks in Baghdad. Two policemen and three civilians were killed in the bombings.


Kenya

Police killed three Shabaab fighters during a raid in the Likoni area in the Coast province. One policeman was killed and three more were wounded in a grenade attack during the raid. Shabaab killed a mobile phone engineer in Liboi.


Nigeria

The Joint Task Force claimed it killed 24 Boko Haram fighters during operations in Maiduguri. Explosions and gunfire have been reported in Potiskum.


Afghanistan

Last weekend’s suicide attack at an NDS headquarters in Kandahar that killed four Afghan intelligence operatives and two ISAF personnel was a green-on-blue attack.
