AQIM names veteran jihadist as new emir

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has named Abu Ubaidah Yusef al-Annabi as its new emir. His predecessor, Abdelmalek Droukdel, was killed in a French counterterrorism operation in Mali earlier this year.




Analysis: Al Qaeda’s deputy emir killed in Iran

The New York Times and other press outlets have confirmed that Abu Muhammad al-Masri, al Qaeda’s deputy emir, was killed in an Israeli operation in Tehran on Aug. 7. His death was originally reported on an al-Qaeda-linked social media account.


IRGC says Intelligence deputy dies of COVID-19

On 31 October, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that intelligence veteran Hamid Mirza’i died of COVID-19. He was the Foreign Intelligence Directorate chief of the IRGC Intelligence Organization, according to an expose of last year.

Veteran Al Qaeda leader killed in western Afghanistan

Mohammad Hanif was involved in the 2002 assassination attempt on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and the suicide attack on the U.S. Consulate in Karachi that same year. He was killed in Farah province. But the Taliban somehow continues to maintain that Al Qaeda isn’t in Afghanistan.



Islamic State claims terrorist attack in Vienna

The Islamic State’s Amaq News Agency claims that the terrorist who carried out an attack in Vienna, Austria yesterday was a “soldier of the caliphate.” Amaq identifies him as Abu Dujana al-Albani. He was imprisoned in 2019 after he attempted to join the Islamic State in Syria, but was released early.
