Iraq

The Islamic State beheaded Steven Sotloff, an American journalist captured in Syria in August 2013, and threatened to kill a British citizen if the US did not end airstrikes in Iraq. The US launched an airstrike near the Mosul Dam. The military said it launched another operation to liberate Tikrit from the Islamic State; several Peshmerga fighters are reported to have been killed in the fighting.
