Negotiations for a post-2014 US presence in Afghanistan are at an impasse; although an agreement has been reached to assure legal immunity for US troops, the US has rejected Afghan requests that the US guarantee Afghanistan’s security and that US troops refrain from searching for al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Afghan President Karzai has said he is in no hurry to reach an agreement.
