Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq killed 18 Sunni worshippers in a pair of bombings at a mosque in Samarra. Security forces killed an al Qaeda leader in Mosul, captured 12 al Qaeda fighters in Madeen, four more in Tikrit, and another in Mosul.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula launched a coordinated offensive against three Yemeni military camps in the southern province of Shabwa. Fifty-six soldiers and policemen were killed during the suicide assaults. AQAP also attempted to attack the Balhaf LNG facility.


India

Police are searching for Afzal Usmani, an operative from the banned terrorist group Indian Mujahideen, who escaped from detention in Mumbai. He is accused of involvement in the 2008 Ahmedabad bombings in which 56 people were killed and over 200 wounded.

Somali government troops backed by African Union peacekeepers captured the town of Mahaday from Shabaab in the first military offensive in nine months. The town was taken with minimal resistance and was one of the last urban areas in central Somalia still under Shabaab control.

Taliban ambush policemen in northern Afghan province
