Nigeria

The Borno state youth vigilante group arrested 19 Boko Haram suspects from five villages in Konduga after the killing of a vigilante youth by a policeman in Maiduguri. Schools in Yobe state that had been closed since Boko Haram attacks in May reopened yesterday.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

AQIM released a video yesterday that appears to show seven Europeans being held hostage by the group, including four Frenchmen kidnapped three years ago. The group also released a video on Sept. 11, in which AQIM emir Abdelmalek Droukdel threatens Morocco and is shown training militants in the mountains of Algeria.


Belgium

Muslim activist Abou Jahjah announced his intention to return to Belgium after living in Lebanon for nearly 10 years. A leading Antwerp politician called for Jahjah to be arrested on his return, citing his links to Hezbollah and the fact that the UK has denied him entry.


Bangladesh

The Supreme Court sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Kader Mullah to death, rejecting an appeal against the the life sentence handed down in February by a war crimes tribunal. The Jamaat-e-Islami, which was banned in July, has called for a nationwide strike tomorrow.

Al Qaeda in Iraq killed 11 people, including an Awakening leader and his family, in attacks throughout the country. Security forces detained eight wanted al Qaeda fighters in Hawijah.


Syria

The Al Nusrah Front said it and a rebel battalion attacked three villages in eastern Homs last week; 22 civilians were killed. Somalia

Gunmen thought to belong to a pro-government militia killed a clan elder in Kismayo. More than 160 Somali clerics denounced Shabaab. The military claimed it disrupted more than 200 attacks in Mogadishu during the month of August.


Egypt

Authorities retook the town of Delga from Muslim Brotherhood supporters who had attacked the Christian community in the town since taking it over in July. Unidentified gunmen targeted a security checkpoint in North Sinai. At least nine policemen were injured when a bomb targeted their bus in the Sinai.



Islamists dominate Syrian insurgency

A recent study by a British defense consultancy estimates that nearly half of the Syrian opposition forces are aligned with extremists, and that only a small minority are affiliated with basically secular or nationalist groups.


Kyrgyzstan

A Kazakh national and two Kyrgyz citizens who recently returned from fighting in Syria have been arrested in the southern region of Osh on terrorism charges. Authorities say the three men had been dispatched from Syria by the Union of Islamic Jihad (IJU) to conduct terrorist activity in Kyrgyzstan.

The Egyptian army announced that recent operations in the Sinai have led to the arrests of numerous “terrorist elements” as well as the seizure of a variety of weaponry. A leading Sinai jihadist group contended, however, that a recent army operation killed seven civilians, including four children.
