Runoff rival Soumaila Cisse conceded defeat last night, acknowledging that former Prime Minister Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has won the election for president. The UN mission in Mali said there were no significant incidents during Sunday’s voting, and that “the lack of violence was impressive in a country which has just emerged from conflict.”


China

A court in Xinjiang sentenced five Uighur men for a “terror attack” in the city of Kashgar in April that killed 15 people. The defendants, who received sentences ranging from nine years to life in prison, were accused of printing extremist literature as well as attacking and killing police officers and community workers.

Authorities announced the names of 26 Palestinian prisoners set to be released as part of an agreement to restart peace talks with the Palestinians.
