Libya

Benghazi “residents” broke into the Al-Kuifiya prison, freeing over 1,000 inmates. Three high-profile assassinations were conducted in Benghazi: a retired military official was shot dead in a mosque, a police commander was killed during a security operation, and Abdulsalam Musmari, a popular lawyer and activist who had criticized the Muslim Brotherhood, was killed while walking home from a mosque. After the killings, protesters set fire to the Benghazi offices of the Muslim Brotherhood and its political wing, the Justice and Construction Party; and staged other demonstrations in Tripoli, Zintan, Tobruk, and Zawiya. The Interior Minister admitted that the 50-some assassinations in Benghazi “appear to be systematic,” but could not explain why no one has been arrested for the crimes. Prime Minister Zeidan said there are some who want Libya to be like Afghanistan, Mali, or Somalia.
