Insurgents killed 14 people in attacks in Kirkuk, Taji, and Hillah. Al Qaeda in Iraq launched attacks on prisons in Abu Ghraib and Taji in an attempt to free high-level leaders.



Yemen

“Gunmen” kidnapped an Iranian diplomat as he was driving his car in the capital of Sana’a. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters gunned down a member of the Popular Resistance Committees in Mudia in Abyan province.

Three security personnel were killed in three separate attacks in the Sinai. Authorities arrested a militant involved in an attack on a checkpoint in the Sinai. Authorities discovered a variety of weaponry being smuggled along the country’s western border. Saudi Arabia provided Egypt with $2 billion in aid.


Palestinian Territories

Former Fatah strongman Mohammed Dahlan said Mahmoud Abbas’ decision to renew peace talks with Israel is political suicide. Hamas officials expressed concern that Egypt’s operations against smuggling tunnels between Gaza and Egypt are causing a “humanitarian situation.” A senior PLO official said the Palestinian leadership has not yet decided to resume negotiations with Israel.

Mali

Six hostages kidnapped in Tessalit yesterday, including the deputy mayor of Kidal and five Malian election workers, were released today near Tessalit. One of the hostages had managed to telephone Serval, the French force in Mali, which then pressured the Tuareg MNLA to ensure the hostages were freed.


Panama

Authorities found two MiG fighter jets, along with two missile systems and radar and electrical equipment, in a North Korean ship traveling from Cuba to North Korea. Panama has asked UN to investigate the ship and its cargo to see if it is in violation of a UN embargo on arms to North Korea.
