Arab Gulf countries plan tougher anti-Hezbollah sanctions than EU

The US killed six al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in a strike that targeted a vehicle as it traveled in the Al Mahfad area in Abyan province. The strike is the first in seven weeks. An intelligence report from the United Kingdom described AQAP as al Qaeda’s “most innovative” affiliate.

A military spokesman said that Boko Haram gunmen killed 20 civilians and wounded a dozen others in Dawashe in Borno state after a civilian vigilante group had arrived in the village to look for insurgents. United States

Secretary of State Kerry urged Egyptian leaders to “step back from the brink” as unrest worsened in Egypt. Officials from the Syrian National Coalition and Saudi Arabia are asking about the delay in sending arms to the Syrian opposition.


Afghanistan

The government claimed that ISAF killed 45 Taliban fighters in an airstrike in Helmand; ISAF claimed it killed 17 in Nimroz. The Taliban killed two ISAF soldiers in Khost and wounded the governor of Samagan province.


Canada

Aaron Yoon, a Canadian who traveled to North Africa in 2011 to join al Qaeda-linked fighters, arrived back in Canada after serving an 18-month sentence in Mauritania. Two of his Canadian high school classmates who had also become jihadists died during the siege of the In Amenas gas facility in Algeria in January.


Iraq

Prime Minister Maliki ordered the arrest of several senior police, prison, and intelligence officials after the al Qaeda prison breakout at Abu Ghraib. Two al Qaeda inmates who escaped from Abu Ghraib died after a bomb they were transporting detonated prematurely. Security forces detained seven al Qaeda fighters in Ninewa province.


Egypt

At least 65 people were killed in clashes throughout the country between supporters of former president Morsi and the army. The Muslim Brotherhood vowed to continue holding protests against the army.
