NSA leaker Edward Snowden applied for temporary asylum in Russia. Emerson Begolly, 24, of Redbank Township, Pa., was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for promoting terrorist attacks over the Internet against US targets. Daniel Morley, a Boston area man who claimed to be an acquaintance of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, has been accused of threatening to blow up an airplane; he allegedly had materials for a pressure cooker bomb before the April 15 attacks. Secretary of Defense Hegel announced a 20 percent cut in top Pentagon staff for the period 2015-2019. Last week furloughs began for some 650,000 civilian Defense Dept. employees; $37 billion was slashed from defense spending this year.
