Egypt

The United States recently agreed to continue providing Egypt with $1.3 billion in military aid despite concerns of rights issues. President Morsi said calls for new elections by the opposition “absurd.” A German Islamist was barred entry to Egypt by authorities. Various Islamist groups including the Muslim Brotherhood partook in anti-Israel rallies in Cairo.

“Gunmen” killed 15 people in an attack on a village in Lafia. The Joint Task Force claimed that Abubakar Adam Kamba was killed in March 2012. The US added Kamba to the list of global terrorists in June 2012 for ties to Boko Haram and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.



Tunisia

Two Tunisian soldiers were killed by a homemade bomb in Dhroga during ongoing operations against terrorists holed up in the Jebel Chaambi area who “receive assistance from other entities” and “are about to move.” Some 45 terrorists have already been detained, including the owner of a weapons storehouse. United States

The parents of captive US soldier Bowie Bergdahl, who has been held by the Taliban since mid-2009, say they recently received a letter from him, and again requested that he be released. President Obama yesterday named Susan Rice as national security advisor and Samantha Power as US ambassador to the United Nations.


Afghanistan

The Taliban claimed credit for a suicide attack on a base in Helmand that killed six Georgian soldiers and wounded nine more. Kandahar’s police chief accused Iran of arming the Taliban. The governor of Kunar claimed a US drone strike killed four civilians, including three children.





Iraq

A suicide bomber killed seven policemen in Taji; seven Iraqi civilians were killed in other bombings in Iraq. Three more policemen were killed in an IED attack in Fallujah. Security forces arrested two al Qaeda supsects in Salman Pak.

The Yemeni military killed two local al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leaders and detained a fighter in Marib; the two AQAP leaders were identified as Anwar al Sanaani and Moamer al Nasheri. Masked gunmen blocked roads and closed shops in Tripoli in protest against Hezbollah’s victory in the Syrian city of Qusayr. The Lebanese military seized an arms warehouse near Bab al-Tabbaneh belonging to Ziad Alouki, who is accused of stirring up sectarian strife by claiming that soldiers stepped on a Koran. The Palestinian Authority requested that Secretary of State Kerry try to secure the release of a number of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. A new Palestinian government was sworn in during a ceremony in Ramallah.


Somalia

Shabaab claimed it executed two “apostate” spies in Barawe; the men were identified as Ali Hussain Wiilow and Fuad Nuur Alasow. Gunmen executed a senior military commander in Hobyo.


Libya

The government ordered Libya’s National Oil Corporation, Libyan Airlines, the Libya Company for Insurance, and the Internal Investment Company to move to Benghazi. Hanan Al-Newaisery, a human rights lawyer and activist, was assaulted and beaten in a Misrata courtroom, as was her father, who required hospital care after trying to protect her from the attackers. US adds al Qaeda explosives expert to list of global terrorists

Abd al Hamid al Masli, a Libyan, is a “key improvised explosive device (IED) facilitator” who operates in Waziristan. He temporarily served as the head of al Qaeda’s military committee, likely after Abdullah Said al Libi, the former head of the Lashkar al Zil, was killed in a drone strike.
