Analysis: Zawahiri’s letter to al Qaeda branches in Syria, Iraq

Al Jazeera has published a letter purportedly written by Ayman al Zawahiri to al Qaeda’s franchises in Iraq and Syria. Two US intelligence officials say the letter is genuine. In the letter, Zawahiri rules on a dispute between the two al Qaeda branches and appoints a new representative in the region.

United Kingdom

A judge sentenced six Islamists from Birmingham to jail terms of nearly 20 years each for plotting a terrorist attack on an English Defence League meeting. The nearly 18,000 items of radical Islamist material found on the defendants’ phones and computers were of “continuing significance,” the judge noted.




Afghanistan

Security forces killed two Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan fighters in Sar-i-Pul and captured four Pakistani fighters in Panjshir. ISAF denied that its forces killed children in an airstrike that targeted a Taliban commander in Badakhshan.


Yemen

The US killed an al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula commander and five fighters in a drone strike in Al Jawf province. Security guards killed seven Houthis outside of a intelligence headquarters in Sana’a.



Israel

Prime Minister Netanyahu said Iran has increased its cyber efforts against Israel. Hamas and Hezbollah have also tried to conduct cyberattacks against Israel, Netanyahu said. The Navy recently concluded an exercise dealing with maritime terrorism.


Egypt

A counterterrorism officer was killed by Islamist militants operating in the Sinai Peninsula. Hamas denied that it was involved in prison escapes during the uprising against Hosni Mubarak.



Kenya

Seven people were wounded in a grenade attack at a church in Mombasa. Three more people were wounded in a bombing in the Eastleigh neighborhood, an area in Nairobi that is know to have Shabaab sympathizers.
