Somalia

Chad said it is withdrawing its forces from Mali, just days after three Chadian soldiers were killed by a suicide attack in Kidal. Tuaregs loyal to the Malian government are assisting the French to rid the country of Islamist militants.


Italy

An Italian journalist recently freed by Syrian jihadist kidnappers said her captors, who included Algerians and Moroccans, had threatened to cut off her hands. Another freed journalist said the kidnappers apparently thought the journalists, who had been filming desecrated Christian churches in Syria, were spies.


United States

Russia

After a two-day gunbattle with militants in Dagestan’s Untsukul district that killed three militants and wounded one security force member, an explosion near a school in Buinaksk killed one policeman and wounded three more. A checkpoint was also attacked.


Somalia

Shabaab claimed to have killed six Kenyan soldiers in Tabta and militia fighters in Jannaale. Somali elders in the south accused the Kenyans of interfering in their internal affairs.


Tunisia

Salafists tried to kill a school administrator in Nabeul who refused entry to a student wearing a niqab. A recent poll found that over 70% of Tunisians are worried about rising religious extremism in the country, with young adults the most concerned, and women more concerned than men.


Libya

Unknown assailants attacked Sebha security forces for the second time in two weeks, killing three security force members and wounding four more. Twenty attackers were arrested, and weapons and stolen cars were seized. Border police arrested some Libyans who were allegedly entering the country from Egypt with pro-Qaddafi material.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

AQIM is using video games designed for children to attract recruits: a recently launched game called “Muslim Mali” shows the message “Congratulations, you have become martyrs!” instead of “Game Over” when a player loses all of his or her lives. Adolescent fighters were arrested in the French-Malian sweep of the Ifhogas Mountains Islamist hideouts.
