North Korea threatened to attack US bases on Guam and Okinawa in response to military exercises involving the US and South Korea. North Korea was suspected in a series of cyberattacks against South Korea.


Myanmar

At least 10 people were killed in rioting between Buddhists and Muslims in central Myanmar. Sectarian fighting in the western Rakhine state left 180 people dead and 110,000 displaced last year.


Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed five people at a madrassa in Helmand. The Taliban beheaded three men in Kandahar and killed a district governor and two bodyguards in Takhar. A policeman killed five of his colleagues in Badghis.



Iran

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei said Iran was not opposed to direct talks with the US to resolve issues over its nuclear program but he was not optimistic. He also said Iran would destroy Tel Aviv and Haifa if Israel attacked Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Syria

A senior pro-government Sunni cleric was killed in a suicide attack inside a mosque in Damascus along with 42 other people. Rebels captured villages near the Golan Heights. The UN said it would investigate claims that chemical weapons were used in an attack in Aleppo earlier this week.





Yemen

Two pro-government militiamen and three al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters were killed in clashes in Jaar in Abyan. Three tribesmen were killed while fighting with government troops in Marib. A senior police official in Hadramout escaped an assassination attempt.

Cyprus

A Cypriot court convicted Hossam Taleb Yaacoub, a Swedish-Lebanese citizen, for his part in the 2012 bombing in Burgas, Bulgaria. The court said “Hezbollah acts as a criminal organization.” Yaacoub had admitted to spying for Hezbollah for the Burgas attack and other operations.


Somalia

Shabaab retook control of Awdinle near Baidoa after seizing Hudur three days ago. The prime minister said the military would retake Hudur, but Ethiopia has indicated it would withdraw its forces.


Nigeria

The death toll in Monday’s suicide attacks in Kano has risen to more than 70. Britain has pledged to help Nigeria with terrorism issues in the north.

Mohamed Anis Chaieb, head of the Salafi jihadist movement in Tunisia, announced the group’s allegiance to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Another Tunisian Salafi jihadist, Ansar al Sharia leader Saif Allah bin Hussein (a.k.a. Abou Iyadh), is currently being investigated by security services.
