Egypt

A military source said Egyptian authorities have no intention of negotiating with Salafists currently protesting the imprisonment of those behind the 2004 Taba bombings. Islamists, including members of the Muslim Brotherhood, attempted to prevent the construction of a church annex in Shubra al-Kheima. Egyptian authorities told Hamas that escalation with Israel harms Egyptian security.


Syria

The Syrian foreign minister said the government was willing to hold talks with the opposition on ending the country’s civil war, the first time a high-ranking government official has stated it. The opposition National Coalition dropped its boycott of talks in Rome with Western backers after promises of substantial increases in aid.

Palestinian Territories

The US Embassy in Israel instructed its staff to avoid the West Bank as a result of ongoing protests by Palestinians, which the Palestinian Authority has helped organize. A senior Hamas official called on Palestinians to kidnap Israeli citizens. Hamas requested a delay in a unity meeting with the rival Fatah faction.

Police arrested a Salafist suspected of killing opposition leader Chokri Belaid. The Ministry of Education threatened to expel those involved in a YouTube video in which some students wore false beards and tunics to mock Salafists. Mali

A Malian army colonel said weapons seized in Gao indicate that Islamist forces in the north have the “capacity of an army” although they lack airpower. Signs have emerged of increasing cooperation among Islamist groups in the region, including Nigeria’s Ansaru and Boko Haram, which may be using Chad as a rear base.


Nigeria

The al Qaeda-linked Boko Haram released a video showing the French family kidnapped in Cameroon last week. Boko Haram threatened to kill the hostages, and demanded the release of male Boko Haram members being held prisoner in Cameroon and female members held in Nigeria. Gunmen killed an Adamawa monarch in Maiduguri.
