US Secretary of State Clinton said Iran has stepped up its military and financial support to the Syrian government. There were also indications that Russia has continued to supply Syria with money and equipment.

Thousands of protesters hurled stones and firebombs at President Morsi’s palace gates as security forces fired tear gas and water cannons; at least 48 people were injured. More demonstrations occurred across the country.
Niger
France is sending special forces to protect the Areva uranium mining sites at Imouraren and Arlit. France derives about 20 percent of the raw material for its nuclear reactors from Niger. Some French forces are said to have arrived in the past week.

Ansar al Sharia Egypt, an al Qaeda-linked group, has called on Muslims to resist France’s intervention in Mali. In an entry on its Facebook page, the group posted an image of the Eiffel Tower being attacked and asked, “Is France unaware of who it is fighting?”

The bomber detonated close to two nearby mosques, one Shia and one Sunni, in Hangu. The attack may have been carried out by the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, or both groups.
