Afghanistan

The NDS reportedly arrested Faqir Mohammed, the former deputy emir of the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, and four others in Nangarhar. ISAF killed two Taliban commanders in Kunar who were involved in planning and executing green-on-blue, or insider, attacks against ISAF personnel.

Morsi aide: Egypt seeks to cut Gaza arms flow

Egypt recently flooded a number of tunnels between Gaza and Egypt in order to cut the flow of arms in and out of the coastal enclave, according to a Morsi aide. The aide also denied that al Qaeda has a structured network in Egypt.


Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq claimed credit for yesterday’s attacks in Baghdad that killed at least 37 Iraqis and wounded more than 130. Al Qaeda also warned Sunnis not to work with the Shia-dominated government.


Syria

The EU amended sanctions on Syria to allow more nonlethal aid, but rejected easing the arms embargo. Rebels captured a government checkpoint near the strategically important Aleppo airport. In support of the Syrian government, Hezbollah attacked villages near the Lebanese border.

Turkey

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu said there is no connection between jihad and terrorism and that those who make the connection are “neo-cons and pro-Israelis in America.” When asked if Turkey considered the Al Nusrah Front a terrorist organization, the foreign minister avoided answering and called the questioner an Orientalist.






Palestinian Territories

Despite earlier denials, Hamas’ Khalil al-Hayya confirmed that Hamas and Israel are engaged in indirect negotiations via Egyptian mediation. He said the negotiations are not “political negotiations” but merely related to the implementation of the ceasefire agreement that brought an end to Operation Pillar of Defense in November.


Egypt

The government is preparing to ban the sale of alcohol “in new residential settlements on the outskirts of Cairo, Alexandria and other big cities.” An aide to President Morsi said the Egyptian pound will not collapse. Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s foreign minister is preparing to brief his European counterparts on his government’s findings into the Burgas terror attack. Bulgaria says Hezbollah was behind the attack; evidence includes “a computer printer in Beirut, DNA traces on a used SIM card and several suspicious telephone calls.”


Israel

Prime Minister Netanyahu is looking to form a broad coalition “to promote an agreement with the Palestinians.” Netanyahu said North Korea’s recent nuclear test shows that “sanctions alone will not stop” Iran’s nuclear program. An Arab-Israeli and two Palestinians were charged with preparing terror attacks during Operation Pillar of Defense.

Sweden

Stockholm suicide bomber Taimour Abdulwahab had received $119,000 in student aid, including a payout after his death; it is unclear if any of the money was used for terrorism, and the investigation is continuing. The national police and security agencies asked the government to make counterterrorism a top priority for their agencies.


Norway

Norway plans to establish a counterterrorism force, in the wake of the Utoya massacre and the killing of Norwegian oil workers in Algeria. A report by Norway’s three public security units found that “people and groups inspired by extreme Islamist ideology is the most serious threat in and against Norway in 2013,” the government stated.


North Korea

The EU tightened economic sanctions against North Korea. The new sanctions were imposed in response to North Korea’s third nuclear test.



Pakistan

The military killed eight Taliban fighters in Arakzai. The government postponed polio vaccinations in Quetta after yesterday’s deadly bombing that killed scores of Shiites.


Thailand

Suspected Islamist insurgents detonated a motorcycle bomb in Pattani city, killing three civilian security volunteers and injuring nine other people. The day before, security forces defused five of seven bombs planted in the city by militants; one person was injured by the bombs.
