An Algerian TV station claimed that Abdelhamid Abu Zeid, a top commander of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, was killed along with some 40 fighters three days ago in Mali. Heavy fighting continued around Kidal. France has not yet requested the formation of a UN peacekeeping force in Mali, but asked that the UN “accelerate” the sending of observers.
