Afghanistan

The US has suspended talks on a long-term strategic partnership over a disagreement on the transfer of detainees. Afghanistan’s army chief said “there will be a lot of trouble” if another Koran-burning incident occurs. The governor of Kunar escaped an assassination attempt.


Yemen

AQAP overran a military base near Zinjibar and killed 185 troops and seized heavy weapons. AQAP claimed it captured more than 70 soldiers. Thirty-two AQAP fighters were reported to have been killed.



Libya

An Islamist mob desecrated graves at the Commonwealth WWII cemetery in Benghazi. Video of the incident shows armed men laughing as they shatter headstones and knock down a large cross. Libyan authorities offered an apology. The two-day attack desecrated the graves of more than 150 British soldiers.


Somalia

Shabaab said it captured the town of Diif on the border with Kenya and also said its “cartographers will soon redraw the geographical boundaries carved up by inebriated colonial masters in preparation for Islamic Khilaafa.” Shabaab and government forces clashed in the Karaan area of Mogadishu; the Somali government claimed it repelled the attacks.



Nigeria

“Gunmen” killed four people in attacks in Maiduguri. Boko Haram’s spokesman said the terror group “will launch a number of attacks, coordinated and part of the plan to eradicate Christians from certain parts of the country.”





Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

The Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, an al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb splinter group, has demanded a $39 million ransom for three European hostages. The two Spanish nationals and an Italian national were kidnapped in Algeria last October.







Norway

Mullah Krekar, the founder of an Iraqi terror group who is currently on trial for threatening Norwegian leaders, spoke at a demonstration in Oslo about the Koran-burning incident in Afghanistan. An al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula suicide bomber killed a soldier in Dar al-Nasr in Baydah province. AQAP killed another soldier in a bombing in Mukallah.


Libya

The Libyan branch of the Muslim Brotherhood allied with other Islamists to establish a new political party. The first post-Gaddafi elections are set for June.


Somalia

A suicide bomber killed only himself during a premature detonation near a Burundian military base in Mogadishu. Seven Shabaab fighters and five Puntland security personnel were reported killed during fighting near Bosaso. Kenya is considering withdrawing from Somalia in October.
