Syria’s deputy oil minister announced his defection to the opposition, the highest-ranking official to do so. Echoing a Chinese statement, Russia called for an immediate end to violence. In a Homs suburb, 62 people were killed. The Syrian army sent reinforcements to the northwestern province of Idlib.


Yemen

The military killed seven al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Zinjibar. The governor of Abyan accused security services and political officials of turning the province over to AQAP.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has reportedly moved a base in Timiaouine in northern Mali to a mountainous area in Algeria. AQIM has relocated due to fighting between Touregs and the Malian government.

Russia

A female suicide bomber, or ‘black widow,’ killed five Russian policemen near the village of Karabudakhkent in Dagestan. Kavkaz Center claimed that 10 policemen were killed in the blast.
