Security forces killed 11 Pakistani and Arab fighters during a clearing operation in Ghazni, and killed and captured several Taliban commander and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Khost, and Logar. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in an IED attack in the south.


Syria

UN envoy Kofi Annan said the situation in Syria was “bleak” and that the Syrian army was still carrying out operations where UN observers were not present. The French foreign minister said the UN should be prepared to take military action.


Russia

Emir Abu Khalid, the senior judge for the Caucasus Emirate’s province of Chechnya, was captured by Russian security forces. Kavkaz Center said Abu Khalid is an “Arab” and was leaving the country for medical treatment.

Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said an Egyptian known as Abu Musab al Masri was killed in a US drone strike in Shabwa on April 16. The military claimed 46 AQAP fighters were killed during its push to retake control of Zinjibar.


United States

A military court denied the motion of Pfc. Bradley Manning, the soldier who released hundreds of thousands of sensitive government documents to WikiLeaks, that sought dismissal of all charges against him. Trial is tentatively set to begin Sept. 21.





Germany

Filiz Gelowicz, the wife of convicted German terrorist Fritz Gelowicz, was released early from prison. In March 2011, she had been given a two and a half year sentence for supporting the German Taliban Mujahideen and the Islamic Jihad Union.

Security forces killed 20 Taliban fighters in Helmand and three more in Logar, and detained several more in Kandahar, Nangarhar, Paktia, and Helmand. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in an IED attack in the south.
