Police arrested Suleiman Mohammed, the operational leader for Boko Haram in the northern city of Kano; weapons and explosives were also seized in the raid at his hideout. The senior Boko Haram commander is from the Yoruba tribe in southern Nigeria.

Explosions Kill Dozens in Damascus

Security forces killed 10 Taliban fighters in Khyber. Six more people were killed during fighting between Lashkar-e-Islam and Ansar-ul-Islam in Khyber. Three civilians were killed in a mortar attack in Khyber.

Afghanistan

Two Taliban fighters and a civilian were killed during fighting in Farah. An Afghan soldier killed an ISAF soldier in the south. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. HIG suspended peace talks with the Afghan government.


Syria

The government thwarted a large car bomb attack in the northern city of Aleppo, a day after two large car bombs exploded in the capital of Damascus. US Secretary of Defense Panetta said al Qaeda had a presence in Syria.



Hamas said it would not go to war with Israel if Iran’s nuclear facilities were attacked by Israel. Hamas created a new force to stop rocket attacks on Israel.




Yemen

Yemeni military officials claimed that eight al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leaders were killed in a “strike” in Jaar in Abyan. US trainers have arrived in Yemen. Senior officials said that the military is preparing to storm Zinjibar.


Somalia

The governor of Bakool said that the 17 Shabaab fighters killed yesterday were blocking supplies to Hudur and looting trucks. “Gunmen” killed two security officials in Puntland.


Kenya

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Samantha Lewthwaite, the widow of London tube bomber Gemaine Lindsay, after she failed to appear in court to face charges of plotting to bomb Kenyan resort hotels. A co-conspirator, Jermaine Grant, appeared in court on Tuesday. Lewthaite is thought to have fled to the protection of Shabaab in Somalia.


Nigeria

The federal government called for Boko Haram to join peace talks and suggested a ceasefire. Three explosions were reported in Maiduguri.
