NATO’s secretary general said its countries are not running for the exit. New Zealand will withdraw its forces from Afghanistan one year early. NATO will close down ISAF’s combat command and transfer operations to the Afghan military. General Allen said that about half of the “green-on-blue” attacks have been carried out by Taliban infiltrators.

Yemen

An al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula suicide bomber killed more than 90 Yemeni troops as they practiced for a parade in Sana’a. President Hadi dismissed three senior military commanders after the Sana’a attack. AQAP killed two soldiers in the south.






Iran

The head of the UN’s nuclear agency held talks in Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program ahead of a six powers meeting scheduled for Wednesday. While the talks were described as “useful,” no substantive agreements were reached.



Syria

The US ambassador to NATO said the alliance had no plans for military intervention in Syria. However, NATO, along with its European and Arab partners, is providing assistance to the Syrian opposition, including political and diplomatic support. US President Obama said that Syrian president Assad must leave power.


Lebanon

The conflict in Syria continued to spill over into Lebanon. An anti-Syrian cleric was killed, prompting protests in Beirut. Two people were killed and 18 injured in street battles between rival Syrian groups in Beirut.


Mali

Police stood by while a crowd of protesters stormed the office of caretaker president Dioncounda Traore and attacked him. His bodyguards shot and killed three of the protesters. Syrian Unrest Prompts Gun Battles in Lebanon






Canada

Prime Minister Harper said that all Canadian troops will be out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014, and that the mission of the 950 trainers sent there will not be extended. Canada pledged to provide $110 million a year to Afghanistan after 2014 to help build Afghan security forces.


Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed two US soldiers and two civilians in Uruzgan. Security forces killed 10 Taliban fighters in the east. The Taliban called for NATO to leave Afghanistan.


Syria

A powerful car bomb killed nine people in the city of Deir al-Zour. Syrian government forces fired on protesters in Aleppo. Shelling by government forces killed 34 in Hama.


Yemen

Eight al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters, four soldiers, and five civilian militiamen were killed in fighting in the south. Three US trainers for the Yemeni Coast Guard came under attack in Hodeida. AQAP emir Nasir al Wuhayshi urged his followers to continue fighting the military.
